Transmission support cross member
Transfer case is bolted onto the transmission its a straightforward boat and boat out type of transfer 10 days if you have the BW 4406 we shouldn't be that hard but you will have to remove the cross member and have something to lower it down with because it's very heavy
You have to hold the trans in place to remove the skid plate.
What exactly are you trying to replace? The crossmember the transmission sits on? I have an 87, and it has a cross member under the transfer case, while the transmission just bolts to the back of the engine. If you have a 2WD model, maybe it goes under the transmission, since there's no transfer case? Anyhow, it's a simple bolt-on part... you'll need a transmission jack to hold up the transmission while you remove the cross member, and you simply unbolt it.

A sign of a transfer case problem is the inability to shift between 2 and 4 wheel drive in the vehicle. Leakage of fluids is also a sign of a transfer case problem. Overheating of the transfer case, slow reaction to shifting, and a general foul odor are all signs of a transfer case problem.
If you aren't mechanically inclined, do not attempt. If so, start by removing the driveshafts, they are attached to yokes at either end of the transfer case. Remove all of the wires and the shift linkage, you may want to mark where they went, but they will not hook up to the wrong spot. Jack up the transmission and place a jack stand under it, and then remove the cross member that goes under the transmission. Lower the transmission a little bit so that you have room to get to the bolts around the transfer case. Remove the bolts and then the transfer case. Reinstallation goes the same way. Make sure the new one is the same kind (np231 or np242) and the same spline count. The count will be 21 or 23.
