If the ignition is locked and the 1996 Ford Ranger key will not turn, there could be a problem with the transmission sensor that lets the ignition sensor know that the car is in Park. Try shifting into neutral with the foot on the brake, then turn the key. If the key turns, the sensors are bad. If the key does not turn, try wiggling the steering wheel while turning the key.

The airbag code 52 on a 96 Ford Windstar often means nothing more than that there is a loose connection in the electrical system. The code can be reset by disconnecting the battery for about 10 minutes, then reconnecting it. If that doesn't work, the code may also be indicating that the airbag itself is not getting power and requires servicing.

I just replaced the ignition switch and lock on my '96 Escort. They come as one unit, so you can't just replace the lock tumbler. Remove the steering wheel (using caution for the airbag), and then remove the multi-function switch. Now you can remove the ignition switch and lock.

The ignition switch is on the steering column about 12 inches from the floor. Remove the 2 screws that hold it on.
