Search engines automatically scan text coded into sites. However, you can submit your domain to individual search engines.

You can create webmaster account in Google, Yahoo, Bing etc. and add your website domain in these account and get it verified. Now create a XML sitemap for your website and submit it in webmaster tool. You will get indexed/cached your web pages frequently by this or if SE will find any problem in crawling your website, you will get notifications also in crawling errors section of Google webmaster tool.

It requires a combination of promotion of your site and having relevant content to match your keywords. The sites that are closest to the #1 slot are going to be those that have the most relevancy based on the keywords you plug in. While you don't have to submit your site to directories, it helps to have it mentioned in blogs, forums, and social networking sites, where it can be viewed by many people and gain popularity from there.
