Kumquats are rarely grown from seed as they do not do well on their own roots. In China and Japan they are grafted onto the trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata). This has been found the best rootstock for kumquats in northern Florida and California and for dwarfing for pot culture. Sour orange and grapefruit are suitable rootstocks for southern Florida. Rough lemon is unsatisfactory in moist soils and tends to be too vigorous for the slow-growing kumquats.

Kumquat trees can live for many years, as long as they are not subjected to cold weather. They do not fair well in temperatures under 14 degrees Fahrenheit.

I'm growing some from seeds. I planted some a few days ago and they are already sprouting, I think. I can't really tell if they are weeds though from pictures in books they look like sprouts.

Kumquats should be harvested when they are yellow - green in color. They keep on ripening even after harvesting and that is why they should not delay before being picked.
