Sometimes it depends on their personality some hamsters are very shy some are not.

Try petting your hamster slowly while feeding it some fruit, this will make your hamster more comfortable around you.

If your hamster is afraid of you make sure to play with it alot. Make sure to hold it securely so it can't fall. If you don't play/hold a hamster for a while it can forget about you and think you will hurt it.

Do not hold them by their skin that seems like a scruff. It is okay but they do not like it. You should hold them in your hand right side up. They should be standing unless they choose not to.

Don't hold them by the scruff of the neck. Pick them up like around their stomache and put them on your hand.

Is it normal for your new pet hamster to be scared of you?

No, it is not normal, but you can try leaving the hamster alone for a little while so he might forget you, then try coming back to him with a friendly face, and and gently pat it. Don't hold it too much though, maybe that might be the reason why he is scared of you.

I got A hamster yesterday should I try to pick him up yet?

yea, at first when i had my hamster i was soo scared to hold her but then my friend tried it for me. It was soo cool. When a hamster goes into a new home you have to get her used to the enviroment. So you should definetely hold him =] hamsters are playful (sometimes) so love them and dont be afriad of them.
