∙ 16y agoBy their appearance or reaction to chemicals. Rock showing visible crystals, such as granite are usually igneous. Rocks displaying evident layering, fossils, or reaction to a weak acid like vinegar are usually sedimentary. Rocks displaying foliation or banding of individual mineral constituents, or having a wavy or platy appearance may be metamorphic. This is not true in all cases, however, as some rock types may mimic the appearance of others in some respect.
