There are 4 ways to speed up rate of reaction

  • Temperature - if you increase this then ther will be more molecules with sufficient energy to reach 'over' the activation energy barrier
  • Concentration - there are more molecules, so more collisions
  • Catalyst (or enzyme in bio-organic reactions) - this is a substance that speeds up the rate of reaction as it lowers the activation energy reaction 'barrier', meaning more collisions will be succesful
  • Surface Area - if one of the reactants is a solid then breaking it up it into smaller pieces will increase surface area at which more molecules can collide to react.

It's all based on the collision theory.

Increasing the temperature of the reaction will always increase the rate, though the actual yield will depend on whether the reaction is exothermic or endothermic.

Increasing the pressure of the reactants will increase the rate if the molecules are gaseous, as will increasing the concentration if the reactants are in a solution.

rate of reaction depends on the Ea (activation energy of a reaction). you can either raise the energy of the molecules by adding heat or lowering the activation energy by using a catalyst

What are 5 ways to control a chemical reaction?

1) Raising the temperature. 2) Increasing the concentration (in solution). 3) Increasing the pressure (in gases). 4) Increasing the surface area of a solid. 5) Use a catalyst.

How does increasing the temperature affect reaction?

Increasing temperature affects a reaction in two ways: 1) at higher temperatures the molecules are moving around faster and collisions and reactions are more frequent, so the reaction - both forward and reverse - speed up. 2) at higher temperatures, the equilibrium state will shift. In some cases it will shift the equilibrium towards the product. In other cases, it will shift it back towards the reactants.

What does heat have anything to do with chemical reactions?

There are several ways of increasing the rate of a reaction. One of them is increasing the temperature. Increasing the temperature adds energy to the molecules, making them move faster and collide more frequently, therefore react more frequently.

What are the three ways discussed in our lessons that chemists can control the rates of chemical reactions?

The reaction rate is dependet on temperature, pressure and reactants concentration.

Can I get lower car insurance rates with DUI if I live in a specific location?

There are ways to reduce your car insurance rates after a DUI. Some states have classes you can take to reduce your rates and there are other ways to reduce also. Perhaps Virginia is providing means of reducing rates that are not available in Michigan.

What causes substances to combine in different ways to make other substances?

A chemical reaction causes substances to combine in different ways to make other substances.

What are three ways to increase the rate at which particular reaction proceeds?

There are three ways to increase the rate of a chemical reaction. One way is to increase the temperature of the reaction, which increases the rate of molecular collision. Another option is to add a catalyst to the reaction which chemically enables the rate of reaction. Lastly, increase the pressure in the reaction area, which increases the rate of molecular collisions.
