Defragmenting the hard drive if it is very fragmented can often speed up your computer. So can fixing registry problems. You can disable features and services you are not using. For instance, if you are not big into visual effects, you can disable most of them to get more performance. If you are not using a laptop or don't have "green" motivations, then you can turn off a lot of the power management stuff to increase performance.

You can also make some hardware changes too. If you can install faster memory or a faster CPU that can help. If you are running low on memory a lot, then you can add more memory so the hard drive won't have to be used for temp files a lot. Then you may want to install a faster hard drive such as a SSD drive at least for use as a system drive. You can also try adding a USB memory stick under Windows 7/8 to use for ReadyBoost.

A computer can be made faster by:

1. Defragging it regularly using Windows Disk Defragmenter.

2. Deleting the temporary files in the system.

3. Reducing the number of programs that start during windows start up.

4. Optimizing system configuration.

5. Adding more RAM (memory).

6. Upgrading the CPU.

7. Upgrading other components such as the graphic card.

Without spending money:

Eliminate all the extraneous software from your machine. Nearly everything you download these days wants to run an "agent" on startup. All it does is sit there and soak up RAM and CPU cycles. If your system tray (down by the clock) is crowded, get rid of as much of that stuff as you can. Additionally there are many gray-area malware apps (spyware adware scareware) which may or may not be picked up by your virus scanner

Below are links to a couple good programs for removing this stuff. First is "Malware Bytes," it will help you find any malicious or semi-malicious programs running on your machine and remove them for you. Second is "Decrapifier." It is intended to be used on a newly purchased computer and will help remove all the pre-packaged demo-ware which comes with new computers.

Be sure you have at least 10% free space on your hard disk and then defrag your hard disk. The defrag utility is in start > accessories > system tools. Or go to My Computer, right click on the drive letter in question, and go to properties. There you should find the defragger and the disk checker.

If you don't mind spending some money:

Adding system RAM can greatly improve the performance of any computer system. Its like putting a turbo-charger on your car, the engine is the same, but it produces a lot more power. You can never have enough RAM for Windows, and adding RAM is always a good way to get a little more performance out of your machine.

Upgrading your video card is also a good way to boost performance in 3d games. Modern video cards have come a long way in the last couple years and a decent 512mb card can be had for under $100.

Improving machines that once performed well:

If your machine used to run better, but is running slow now, your best bet is to do a few system-maintenence measures to speed things up a bit.

First, do a good spyware scan. Spybot Search & Destroy or Lavasoft Adaware are both excellent freeware programs which will scan your system for useless software and remove it automatically. Both are linked below.

Second, make sure you don't have infections. There are plenty of antivirus tools for this.

Third, see all that stuff down in your system tray (on the start bar by the clock), all that stuff is qeued up to run on startup and then just sit there soaking up RAM and CPU cycles. Go through those programs and through their prefs and tell them to stop loading on startup. Failing that, Spybot S&D also has an excellent utility for removing unwanted programs from the startup routine.

Fourth, optimize your operating system. Windows by default loads up all sorts of services that may or may not be necessary for your particular usage needs. I suggest searching for "Windows XX optimization guide" with XX as your Windows version for more info on what you do and dont need.

Fifth, and maybe this should be first. Unplug your machine, remove the cover, and blow out all those dust-bunnies. A clean computer is a cool computer, and a cool computer is free to operate faster.

How hard drives affect performance

Getting the most performance from your PC requires that all its components are operating at their full capacity at all times.

By far, the slowest component in any system is the hard drive, since it is mechanical and is in constant use (even if when only web browsing many pages download temp files to your system to access their content, causing items to be written and read).

Perhaps the biggest destroyer of hard drive performance is fragmentation, as having pieces of files and free space randomly scattered all over your disk necessitates a lot more disk action to write and later access the files than would otherwise be needed (even insufficient RAM boils down to slowed disk performance as the page file will have to be used more when RAM is low). Keep the HDD well organized. The HDD can be the culprit on an otherwise well equipped system. Be careful about downloading and installing the programs and defragment regularly to keep data access smooth. In fact you can even automate the task or get a defrag program that will proactively tackle fragmentation. Besides this, run a disk cleanup often and ensure your security updates are in place.

So while getting more RAM will certainly help (mainly because the disk will be used less until the RAM is used up), the real bottleneck occurs at the hard drive -- it's the weakest link in any system.

That being said, the best investment would go in the direction of getting and using advanced third party defrag solutions that can automatically defrag your disks as needed, not over night or "once a month", but now, when the disk is being used.

Here is a link to a Top 10 Review which compared the leading defrag programs and ranked them according to performance and value (their Gold Medal winner, Diskeeper, is the only solution available which actually prevents fragmentation). You can get a trial for the gold medalist.

These appear in the links below under "Top 10 Review of Defrag Solutions" and "Defrag".

A computer can be made faster by

1)defragging it regularly using Windows Disk Defragmenter. (This is false, the purpose of the disk defragmenter is to clean up missing space in the OS, this is only good typically after uninstalling something).

2)deleting the temporary files in the system.

3)reducing the number of programs that start during windows start up.

4)optimizing system configuration

5)adding more RAM [memory] (be sure to check if it is compatible! DDR2 is not compatible with DDR3, for example. Find out your type of RAM by either opening up your case and looking or at crucial.com and scanning!)

6)upgrading the CPU

7)Upgrading other components such as Graphic Card

If you want to incease you computer speed, you can follow the methods below:

Solution One: Keep Spyware Away from Your Computer

Spyware refers to any technology that can infiltrate into your computer and secretly download undesirable advertisements onto your computer or silently gather your confidential information for obtaining illegal profits through sending them to remote servers.

To speed up a slow PC and remove spyware from your computer, you may consider enabling a trusted spyware removal tool on your computer. Microsoft Security Essentials combines with a list of professional utilities which can help you detect, block and remove any sign of malicious software instantly and safely.

Solution Two: uninstall unwanted programs

Many software developers intend to set their products to run at system start- up for recovering development costs. The more programs you install on your computer, the more slowly your system runs. To improve computer performance, you should have to clean up the undesirable programs safely from your computer. To prevent any damage to your system, you may firstly consider enabling the Windows Add/Remove app to solve the problem:

For Windows XP user:

1. Click Start, and then go to Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs icon.

2. From the Currently installed programs list, find out and locate the program that you want to remove, click Remove.

3. Click Yes to confirm the modification once any prompts pop up.

For Windows 7 and Windows Vista users:

1. Enable Programs and Features by clicking Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.

2. Locate the program you need to uninstall, and then select Uninstall option. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Solution Three: Remove Unneeded Disk Files.

Once you successfully uninstall programs with Windows Add/Remove app, it is suggested to enable the Disk Cleanup utility to help you remove the associated program files:

For Windows XP user:

Step One: From the Start menu, click My Computer.

Step Two: In the My Computer, right-click C: drive, and then go to Properties.

Step Three: From the Properties dialog box, click Disk Cleanup. Select the check boxes next to the files that you need to perform the removal task, and then click OK.

Step Four: Click Yes to the proceed with this action, and then click OK.

For Windows 7 and Windows Vista user:

Step One: From the Start menu, navigate to All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. Then Disk Cleanup will automatically scan your disk for files you can delete.

Step Two: Click Disk Cleanup, and then select the check boxes for the files you want to delete.

Step Three: When you finish selecting the files you want to delete, click OK, and then, to confirm the operation, click Delete files. Disk Cleanup then removes all unnecessary files from your computer.

Furthermore, the built- in Disk Cleanup utility also combines with the ability to help you remove unneeded files listed below:

Temporary internet files

Downloaded program files, such as Microsoft ActiveX controls and Java applets

Files from the Recycle Bin,

Windows temporary files, such as error reports,

Optional Windows components that you don't use,

Installed programs that you no longer use and unused restore points and shadow copies from System Restore

Solution Four: Fix Registry Problems.

The Windows registry is a database used for storing the entire information of low-level operating system components and the applications that make use of Windows registry. Any problems or errors occur to the Windows registry can possibly bring about a list of annoying system problems, including drastic reduction of system performance, software instability, increasing times of program crashes, missing crucial system files and application errors.

Are you using xp?

Xp has very cool features, however it demands lot of memory from your PC...try disabling some features to use less memory...like using the classic desktop instead of the colorful one...you can do that on PC settings and task bar menu...

Also go to the settings and hit on System...there go to the advance tab and click on performance settings, there uncheck all option you think won't affect your computer and that will help faster up a little...

Change internet explorer for firefox and you'll see.

Learn how to make your PC run faster, clean old files and make it work better, I'll share with you this articles I wrote that would help you and also give it some maintenance. If it worked for you, please vote. Have a nice day!

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/856201/make_your_pc_run_faster_than_ever.HTML?cat=15

To speed up your computer and free up space and memory for free:

Go to the Start Menu> Run

Type in "appwiz.cpl"

Uninstall whatever you don't need.

Next, go to Start> Run and type in "msconfig".

Go to the Startup Tab and uncheck everything you don't want to startup. If you want, you can uncheck everything, and your anti-virus will still restart itself when you log on.

Now go to My Computer> Hard Drive> Documents and Settings> [USER NAME]> Local Settings> and delete everything inside the Temp Folder. (This is a hidden folder so you will need to have "show hidden files and folders" checked in Folder Options) All the files in this folder are just temporary files that your Internet stored that for certain websites.

Then go to My Computer> Hard Drive> Windows> Prefetch and delete everything inside it. This folder is like an cache for programs and should be emptied about once a month.

Next, you should install CCleaner, it will get rid of a lot of temporary files on your computer. It also has a registry repair system, which is easily the best free one available on the Internet:

http://www.ccleaner.com/download

Another option is to try defragmenting your computer.

Go to the Start Menu and go to All Programs

Go to Accessories and System Tools.

Choose Disk Defragmenter and when it loads click defragment.

Next, go to Device Manger (Start> Right Click My Computer> Properties> Hardware Tab> Device Manager) and update all drivers.

Another thing I would say is to compress your files if you already haven't.

Open My Computer and right click on your hard drive

Check the Compress Drive button and let it do its thing.

Finally, make sure your Hard Drive doesn't have any bad sectors. Go to My Computer> Right Click Hard Drive> Properties> Tools Tab> Check Now> Check both boxes and Start. It will ask you to reboot, so reboot. This will clear out any bad sectors on your Hard Drive.

These are short-term solutions however. The easiest way is to just upgrade the RAM on your system, but at least the ways above are free.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first tip to fix a slow running computer should be scan viruses. Computers are especially vulnerable to viruses that get loaded onto the computer, which are notorious for stealing user's privacy, taking up memory and generally wreaking havoc on the operating state of your computer. Besides making the computer to run slowly, viruses can also bring in some other problems to the PC just like adbwinapi.dll error and error code 08X004231f which stops you from backing up some files correctly. So to fix a slow running computer, you have to always scan the computer for viruses, making it well protected against viruses.

The second reasons for why the computer running slow is all to do with the number of programs you have inside. It is quite common for you to install some certain programs onto the PC to accomplish some PC requests. However, the more programs you installed, the slower the computer will be. When there is no enough RAM or system resource for you to finish your giving orders, the computer will stop responding. To ensure the smooth PC running, it is best that you can check and uninstall the unwanted programs from the PC.

The third step that you need to do vitally is to release more available memory. So when running large application, you can first turn off other running program expect the one that you do need. Besides, please do remember to timely uninstall the unwanted programs that you do not need to release more available memory. Moreover, you should run a Disc Cleanup to regularly clear the useless system junk files from your computer, which followed by a simple disk defragmentation. In this way, all files will be arranged coherently on the hard disk and easier to be accessed to, which will not only fix some unexpected hard disk errors but also optimize PC performance at the same time.

To update device drivers to the latest version if the fourth thing you should do when the computer running slow. The outdate drivers will stop the computer from loading or running properly. Hence, the last tips that I want to say here is that you can update all device drivers to the latest ones and install all available Windows service packs. These also help to fix kinds of computer errors.

There are many things you can do:

  • Clean it with CCleaner,
  • Clean the Registry with Glary Utilities or Easycleaner
  • Clean temp files with Glary Utilities or Easycleaner
  • Clean the Restore Points with Disk Cleanup: Computer/Right click on C: drive/Properties/Disk Cleanup/Wait for it to finish scanning/More Options/Cleanup System Restore/Delete/OK/Delete Files/Wait for it to finish/Done!
  • You can increase your memory by downloading CleanMem
  • Scan your computer for malware with your antivirus, or if you don't have an antivirus you can use Avira Antivir Personal, SuperAntispyware, and MalwareBytes
  • Defragment computer with Diskeeper Lite if you have Windows XP, and Defraggler if you have Vista. NOT WINDOWS DISK DEFRAGMENTER ITS CRAP!

if its STILL not fast enough, there are more things you can do but they will sacrifice some aspect of your computer.

  • Right click desktop, for Vista, Personalize/Desktop Background/Location/Solid Colours/choose a colour/OK, for XP, Properties/Desktop tab/Background/None/Color/Choose a colour/OK
  • For Vista, Control Panel/System and Maintenance/Check your computer's Windows Experience Index base score/Adjust Visual Effects/Adjust for best performance. For XP, Control Panel/Performance and Maintenance/Adjust Visual Effects/Adjust for Best Performance.
  • For Vista, Control Panel/Search for "Power"/Change Power Saving Settings/Choose High performance (This is bad for environment), don't know if XP has anything like this.

There's loads more tweaks I've missed out on the internet, but remember don't just type things like "how to speed up computer" cos you'll get rubbish tweaks, but type things like "secret way to speed up computer" or "advanced way to speed up computer" or even " advanced tweaks for computer"

You could add some RAM memory. You can buy them online, just type RAM Memory.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When your computer runs so slow, do remember to make sure that your computer is always virus-free. Besides of colleting and stealing user's personal information, viruses or spyware programs are notoriously known for eating up computer resources and slowing down computer speed. When there are not enough computer resources for the computer to start up or running some certain programs, it will become desperately slow and will crash quickly. So it is best that you can make your antivirus antispyware programs running in the background to detect and remove computer threats at any time.

Secondly, you should do an update job regularly. The computer or some certain programs on your computer will stop working then they are outdated. So to speed up computer performance, to update your computer is no longer an optional part. These three updates include:

*. Update your software especially anti-virus programs to the latest version to realtime prevent viruses, worms, spyware attacks;

*. Update your computer with the latest Microsoft patches, fixes to prevent some bugs that cause by the system itself.

*. Update your device drivers to the latest ones to prevent some errors like computer keeps crashing and Windows update errors.

Note: Right now, all updates are freely available on the Internet for almost every antivirus program, email client, operating system, and piece of hardware that you could possibly own.

Then, uninstall the unwanted program from the All Program List: Start -> ALL Programs (or Program Files) -> Scroll to the program you need to uninstall -> enable the built- in uninstall tool in the program -> totally uninstall the program.

After uninstalling programs, you'd better defragment computer hard disk. Lots of computer users have never run a disk defragmentation during the lifetime of the computer, thinking that it means nothing to the fix a slow running computer. But it is a true fact that, a simple disk defragment plays a very important role in fixing computer problems as this process helps to reassemble all parts of a same content to make them stay close together. In this way, it helps to reduce the movement of the hard disk head and speed up the data access effectively. So if wanting to optimize computer speed, do not ignore to run the Windows built-in Disk Defragmenter utility regularly!
