To grow a coconut tree, you first need a coconut. You can't use the small, round, brown thing you find at the grocery store though. You need to have the WHOLE coconut, with the husk intact. When selecting a coconut to grow, pick the healthiest looking one (no signs of rotting or mold), and make sure you can hear juice sloshing inside when you shake it. The coconut should have fallen from the tree on its own, and be a nice tan-brown color. (no green ones!) Before planting, soak the coconut in a bucket of water for 2-3 days.

You have to plant the coconut in a mixture of soil and sand (a 50-50 mixture should be fine). You should have it in a pot big enough that there is at least 1-3 inches between the coconut and the edge. Make sure to plant it pointy end down (the part that was once attached to the tree up). Bury it 2/3 of the way in the sand, so the top 1/3 is sticking out.

Water it regularly, and keep the soil nice and moist. BE SURE to have proper drainage, as you don't want to drown your coconut. Perhaps the most important thing, however, is temperature. Remember that coconuts are tropical plants and like it very warm. The soil temperatures MUST NOT drop below 60 degrees Fahrenheit for any extended period of time. The optimal soil temperature is 72 degrees. If you are having trouble keeping it warm enough (like me, a CT dweller), you can get a string of tube Christmas lights from wal-mart (any color is fine) and wrap them around the pot . I have only done this in a thin plastic pot, and it worked wonders. If you have a thick ceramic pot, you may want to line the inside of the pot with the lights before adding soil . They give off plenty of heat and will warm the soil nicely. You can keep tabs on the temperature with a cheap soil thermometer, available at your garden center. If it seems too hot, you may want to remove some of the coils until the temperature reaches the 70's again. The air temperature should be above 70 at all times, but even up to 100 is OK. If you have an old incandescent desk lamp, you might want to set it up as a kind of heat lamp over your coconut.

Once it begins to grow (can take 1 month to as many as nine, with the average being 2-3) you want to be sure to mist it often. Coconuts LOVE humidity. You should also try and keep the seasons correct. During the cooler months, you should barely water it. This can lead to root rot. During the warmer summer months, feel free to water it as much as you please, as long as it's draining right.

It may be a while before you are hanging a hammock off your tree, but coconuts can make great indoor/outdoor plants if cared for properly.

well, it's a very complicated process, but I'm willing to tell you because I love you. first, the coconut of a coconut tree is ripped open, and you take out all the juices inside, and you boil it over a fire of coconut tree wood. then, you freeze the coconut juices into coconiscicles(it's a word, look it up). when that is done, you must pray to the elfen god of trees, whose name eludes me at the moment. taking your blessed coconiscicles, you must sharpen them and cut your wrist with them, allowing the blood to drip over it. now, you have to take the three coconiscicles and stick one through both feet and two through each hand, while lying down face up on a crucifix and attaching your self to it in the same position. lastly, and you're going to need a friend for this, you'll be propped up under the shade of nother cocunut tree as your friend prays to the elfen tree god for 12 hours and fasts for 1 week. soon as you rot into the earth, the milk should fertilize the land and a sapling will sprout after aprox. 2.5 years

Dig up everything you can once the new sprouts appear, and it should work, also, depending on the size, you might be able to kill it by keeping all water away from it. If you have it in a spot where it might get a lot water, try to change something to stop it from getting water, and then keep cutting it down.
