in order to answer this question, you must first determine where the PRION is coming from. What causes the (any infected body) protein to begin the mal folding process? Or is the prion simply ingested from diseased tissue? (beef, sheep, goat..... and which tissue? And why were cannibals suseptible? What cannibal source initiated the disease? (brain tissue, or affected motor related, ie nerve related matter?) If incubation is two to twenty three years....?? what implications does that factor suggest?

where or what is the source of the deadly protein...that is the question.

You can inactivate them, not kill them. They are technically not alive. Think of them more like a substance, a protein to be exact. household bleach will inactivate prions if left in a bleach/water solution for at least 30 minutes. the directions for this are under the "prions" topic on Wikipedia. After this you must also ensure they are not able to reproduce by setting your objects for sterilization into an autoclave at about 270 degrees fahrenheit for at least 15 minutes.

The word "Prion" was derived from the words protein and infection.

A prion is an infectious agent composed of protein in a misfolded form found in parts of animal tissue, particularly in the brain or parts a given animals body which people will sometimes eat and by this it is transferred to humans. The prion reproduces by inducing the normal proteins in your body to alter or change themselves into its own deformed state and this process repeats, leaving your brain with big spaces between the brain cells eventually killing you. It turns your brain into a sort of sponge. common names of prion diseases are Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow), Creutz feld-Jacob Disease, Scrapie, feline spongiform encephalopathy, etc...

Absolutely. Pathologists wear masks when doing brain autopsies on brains to avoid Prions

You can't "kill" something that isn't alive. Prions are misfolded proteins, not bacteria or viruses. See the related question below for the question "Can you deactivate prions?"

You don't. Medicine has yet to find an effective treatment to transmissible spongiform encephalopathies.

Can you kill prions by sterilization?

No, cooking does not destroy or disable prions. If you were able to cook a meat that contains prions to the point where the prions were disabled, the meat would be rendered inedible. You can use chemicals mixed with heat to destroy prions, but that's not a process you would want to subject your food to.

Can utensils used to cook elk infected with Chronic Wasting disease pass prions on after being washed?

Yes, especially if they haven't been put through a steaming process of over 250 degrees Celsius prior to being used. Steaming through autoclaving is the only way to destroy prions; all other methods are futile against prions.

What pathogen is a packet of proteins with no RNA or DNA?

Prions

Is DNA found in all prions?

No, DNA is not found in any prions. Prions are just protein - they don't contain a nucleic acid.

Do prions contain DNA or RNA?

Prions are an infectious particle made of protein. They do not contain DNA or RNA.

Do prions have RNA?

No, prions aren't organisms or even organism imitators like viruses. Prions are misfolded proteins that can aggregate and cause serious neurological problems. See link below for more info about prions from Answers.com.

Why are prions unique?

Prions are made up only of proteins and lack nucleic acids.

What systems do prions affect?

Prions affect the nervous system (the brain and other neural tissue).

How are viroids and prions the same?

Both Viroids and Prions have nucleic acid, but Viroids have no outer protein coat.

Do class b sterilizer kill prions?

Prions are only destroyed by:• incineration• autoclaving in 1N NaOH

Can you deactivate prions?

You can by the typical means after trying extremely hard. Prions are unusually stable proteins, which means the normal denaturation methods (high temperature, proteases, and formalin & radiation treatments) can only reduce infectivity but not hydrolyze the structure completely. Raised temperatures will destroy normal proteins, but prions would require incredibly high temperatures and pressures that make it an ineffective treatment. The tertiary structure has been shown to be destroyed after treatment with bleach or caustic soda, or acidic substances, however. Other modi operandi are being researched to treat prion infections and amyloids. Prions are still poorly understood and the diseases they cause are still uncurable.

Is bacterium larger than prions?

Much larger, prions are just proteins containing no nucleic acids or lipid bilayer.
