How do you know if a timing chain or gears need to be replaced on a 1992 E-150 with a 302 5.0?

Take the dist cap off and watch the rotor. Turn the engine back and forth and see how much the engine turns without turning the rotor. If you move the balancer more than about 3/4 inch, I would say the chain needs replaced.

Get the Haynes manual for the unit, they have a good, detailed diagram on aligning the timing marks on the timing gears being turned by a chain. There is no belt on this engine.

YES, The 1992 Jeep Wrangler 2.5 liter engine (4 Cylinder) Does have a timing chain. I just finished a rebuild of My 2.5 and it does in fact have a Chain.

The e36 M50 has a timing chain. The e30 has a belt. Black plastic intake manifold = Chain Metal intake manifold = Belt

pull the timing cover back off and make sure that the timing marks on the timing gears are parallel (in line) with each other cuz more than likely the mark is off there fore making your timing out which wont let your rotor line up

depends on the engine if its a single over head cams it has a belt if a dual over head has a chain

If it has an automatic transmission, it probably needs to be replaced or rebuilt.

The problem may be that you have a bad idle air control vale, a bad throttle position sensor, a dirty e.g.r. valve, a stretched timing chain and gears.

Assuming a 3800 (3.8L) engine, it has a timing chain which, with a little luck should last the life of the car/engine.
