A slipping transmission is like driving on ice or trying to get away from the monster in your dreams. You are running like mad but not going anywhere and when you wake up you are still in the same place but are overheated. Change your fluid and transmission filter.
The tranny slipping
If it is a tranny issue than it would be the result of too much transmission fluid or worn clutchpacks. Also the torque converter stator could be going out and is slipping.
gears are slipping or not enuff fluid in transmission
It's in a Failsafe mode! (electrical problem) Take it to a tranny shop tell em if they can hook it up to a computer for the tranny and hopefully they'll tell you the problem.... try changing the tranny fluid and put a new filter in and add a bottle of Lucas transmission fix and pray.
If it's slipping, it's most likely a slipping clutch problem. If it's an automatic, you're talking about a complete transmission rebuild. If it's a manual shift you're talking about a new clutch plate, pressure plate and throwout bearing and you'll need to have the flywheel resurfaced. The vibration could be several problems, but you had better take care of the slipping problem first, because once a transmission starts slipping, it doesn't last long. Clutch surfaces in an automatic aren't very thick and they don't last long once they start slipping.
A power surge under a load is probably the transmission slipping. If its a manual transmission the pressure plate is slipping on the disc. If it is an automatic most likely it is a worn clutch pack slipping. If it surges at idle with the tranny in park the surge is usually a defective IAC (Idle Air Control) valve.
The Bands in the transmission are slipping/ the tranny is bad.
You need to determine if it's a stuck tranny or a linkage problem. Set the brake. Get under the car and remove the linkage end from the tranny. If the tranny can be shifted by hand from here then the problem is in the column. If it's still jammed take it to a shop for repair as it is beyond the scope of this page to explain how to tear down an automatic transmission. cost 3-4 grand to replace
Tranny cooler? sounds like bs to me. But the kickdown is something this car has a problem with. I recommend going to multiple mechanics and ask for a quote.
Your transmission is done. Take it to a tranny shop. If you have a Manual tranny: Your blocker rings are worn out or you somehow successfully ground the teeth off of a straight gear. If it's an auto tranny: Could be hydraulic valve problems or clutch pack/band problems.
