YOUR CAR WILL RUN IF IT IS NOT YOUR CAR WILL NOT RUN!!!!! if you mean my car won't run and is it the distributor, please check to see if your plugs have spark. If not, then no it is not working. But, none the less if the distributor is shot, don't be a tight wad. The most expensive distributor cap I have ever seen was $28.00. However, the distrbutor shaft itself, if it isn't working, that means your motor has siezed.
IF your coil isn't working first check to see if its getting voltage. If it is replace the coil. If it isn't then you got a wiring problem. That could be caused by a number of problems. Note when checking a coil there are proper procedures for checking it. Basic simple test for checking it from a repair manual will help isolate the problem. Can't go into details not knowing the make and model of your car.
first of all you need to know what kind of engine you are working on
You will have no spark from the distributor. You will have no spark from the distributor.
Number 1 plug position will be listed on the cap. Now if you know the firing order, and you know the direction the distributor is turning, you then will know plug positions as connected to the distributor cap.

It could be that the distributor was not the problem. Need to know what the code is and what engine you have.
Not that I know of. I prefer it. It lets me know it's working.
You first need to know the firing order and the #1 location on the distributor cap. Best way is to get yourself a service manual for the vehicle you are working on.
If the distributor has failed, the vehicle will probably not run. If the distributor is failing, the only way to really test this is by replacement, since it requires special equipment to test a distributor.
If your scars heal and if you can move your muscles, you know your cells are working.
...don't you need a distributor? unless you're coil on plug, and computer controlled, it needs a mechanical distributor. apart from that, bust out the repair manual. it will tell you where everything is, usually with a picture for reference. if you still can't find it, you probably shouldn't be working on the vehicle. if the picture helps you find stuff, you need to trace the wires from the ecu to the coil (if computer controlled, ensuring no breaks) and from the battery to the coil, check the coil, if good keep moving up to the distributor, if that's still good, check your plug wires.

Auto zone carries the ICM. I did my ICM & Coil together. Be sure the trigger/triggers are working (they rarely die). I tested mine using an LED and spinning the distributor by hand to get a pulse out of the LED. Adam Goldstein
