Basically, you know that family was important to the Romans by studying your history. However, the Roman family was not the family as we know it today. The Roman family was a political unit. Without a powerful family or an alliance with a powerful family a man's chances for success in politics or in certain business ventures was zero. Alliances were formed by marriages, adoptions, or the Roman concept of amicitia.

By looking at the name of their clans you can tell whether they were patricians (the aristocrats) equestrians (the second highest social rank) or plebeians.
