You can tell if a person is sleeping by the way they are breathing. If they are breathing Normal, then they are awake. But if their breathing is slow and relaxed then they are asleep. Plus, if they are awake their eyes will have a twitch in them.
Without extensive equipment including electrodes and brain scanners, it is not possible to tell for certain whether or not a sleeping person is dreaming. However, if one observes "rapid eye movement" beneath the sleeper's closed eyelids, it is likely that the person is dreaming.
