you can tell when youre piercing is starting to heal when there is a red circle around the hole, this shows that its starting to heal, but when this happens, you still must clean it everyday until the red circle has gone, this can be between 2-4 months

Well the piercing needs to heal, this can take up to a year for a piercing to become seasoned (this is when you can remove the jewellery for a few hours and not have an issue putting it back in).

Average heal time can vary from piercing to piercing from 4~6 months for some and others a lot longer. Light heals are not considered "healed" and can be damaged by removing the jewellery too soon.

When the discharge eases and the piercing starts to become more comfortable then these should be signs that the piercing is healing up nicely.

It will not puss or have flaky skin around it. It will also have been at least 6 months after getting it done. A belly button has a long healing process.

Can you get a belly button ring without getting your belly button pierced?

When you get your belly button pierced, the person doing it will generally, if not always, use a stainless steel belly button ring. At least they will if they're a professional, and if not you don't really need to get a piercing from them anyway. This will have to stay in until the piercing is properly healed and then you can put in a clear or plastic retainer, available in different colors.
