How do you know when you begin puberty?

Males...In males, one of the first visible signs is pubic or facial hair appearing. The "breaking" of the voice is another sign that is usually obvious. Other signs are darkening and enlarging of the testes and scrotum. You may also find you are becoming more sexually aroused and aware. Females...In females, one of the first visible signs is the enlargement of breasts and the start of menstruation. Mood changes and pubic/underarm hair are also signs of the onset of puberty.

If you are a girl, you may start to have periods, and notice breast growth.

If you are a boy, your voice will start to break, and hair will start to grow around your genitals, on your face, and on your armpits.

You will know when you have hit puberty when you have irrational mood swings, if you're a girl your breasts will enlarge and form and your period will start (some people later than others), your hips will take form and you will get a more hourglass figure.

If you are a boy your shoulders will broaden, you might notice a change in your penis, your voice will start to become deeper, sometimes when your body is going through this change you might get sudden erections. But both boys and Girls will notice pubic hair starting to grow.

This process usually starts around ages of 11-15.

Girls have either had a first period or not. With boys, it is not so easy. Puberty starts gradually and not suddenly. If facial or pubic hair has started growing, puberty has started. (However, some few men, especially with Asian or American Indian ancestors never grow that hair.) The male voice box starts swelling. The male penis gets bigger. The adolescent growth spurt begins. A boy suddenly overtakes in height a girl who was slightly taller than he was.

For girls: Usually the first thing that will happen in puberty is glands and organs inside your body (such as the ovaries) start getting bigger. You won't notice this. But on the outside of your body, you will notice your breasts have a hard lump under the nipple that will eventually push out and your breasts will start growing.

For boys: The first thing you might notice is that you grow a bit taller. Your testicles, ('balls') will grow too. You will notice that your penis also grows and you start to get extra hair in that area. This is called pubic hair.
