How do you locate and install a voltage regulator on a 1984 Olds Cutlass Supreme?

: It is located inside the alternator. Replacing it requires the use of a soldering iron. You have to remove the housing bolts on the alternator when it is off the vehicle. Then, there is a plastic cover over where the 4 wires for the voltage regulator is soldered in. Heat the connections with the soldering iron, and use a flat screwdriver to separate them. If I remember correctly, there are 2 small screws that hold the voltage regulator in. Installing the new regulator is reverse of removal. You will also need a small wire or Allen wrench to hold the brushes in while putting the housing back together.

When separating the housing, pay attention to the alignment of the two halves.

It's inside the alternator, most people just replace the alternator if it isn't charging but you can take the alternator apart if you know how and put in a new voltage regulator for about $15.

Which regulator and what year? You have a window regulator, voltage regulator, fuel pressure regulator to name a few.

Its a simiconductor device inside of the alternator.
