The solenoids are attached to the valve body inside the transmission. They rarely fail. Most probably, you have either clutches that have worn out, or internal seals are leaking. Change the fluid and filter, and if that doesn't help, find a trustworthy shop to rebuild your transmission.

If your not familure with transmissions I would suggest taking to a trans repair shop. There is a diagnostic procedure you must perform to ensure it is a solenoid and not a wiring issue. If you are confident it is the solenoid they are located in the valve body which is inside the trans pan.

I have a `00 blazer and recently my car started making a loud winding noise also. Come to find out I had to have a whole new transmission due to that noise! The repair shop said that the noise is the first sign of the transmission going out!
