My son just bought a '96 Z24 and we had to have the alternator rebuilt. I tried several tools to get at the tensioner wheel and came up with the following:
I put a box end wrench on the bolt in the center of the tensioner wheel, then slipped a short piece of pipe (2 ft) over the other end of the wrench and used it for leverage to move the tensioner wheel and loosen the belt to slip it off the alternator.
No, the motor it self is different so are the connections to the alternator.
loosen the alternator
how do I loosen fan belt to remaove alternator for replacement of alternator?
Begin by loosen the tensioner bolt. Slide the alternator to the left and remove the belt. Remove the wiring harness from the back of the alternator. Remove the alternator retaining bolts.
This is from the Owners Handbook of my Mazda 323, 1996 : Alternator Drive Belt. 1. Loosen the alternator mounting bolt and adjusting bar bolt. Replace Fanbelt. 2. Turn the adjusting bolt until the correct tension is obtained. The deflexion should be 10mm. 3. Tighten bolts and recheck the tension.
Look at the top and left of the motor. It's easy to get to. The tension pulley is right below the alternator.
Since There is no tensioner pulley you have to loosen your alternator.
you will see a 1/2" square slot in the tensioner, use a 1/2" breaker or a standard ratchet with a short extension, pop that into the slot, release the tension on the belt. jr
alternator is probably not charging. you need to fix this NOW. new alternator is likely the only repair.
on my 1996 mazda, i had to jack up the car and remove the right front wheel to get to the bottom through-bolt holding the alternator. the 2 tension adjustment bolts are accessed from the top. I also removed the splash shield for access to the belt. Since the alternator belt is inboard of the power steering belt, you also have to loosen this belt. it's me ...reysher
What bolts to loosen to put alernator belt on and how to put it on when a/c belt is on.
it's a red wire that's connected to your alternator that about half way down turns blue and connects into the starter solinod
If it's the alternator belt, loosen the bolts holding the alternator in place, then use something like a hammer handle to pry the alternator away from the engine which will tighten the belt. Hold the pressure on the alternator while tightening the bolts. This is a general procedure, not specific to 1996 dodge.
There is a pully that will ratchet up and down to loosen or tighten the belt. Take the belt off, unplug the wire from the alternator, and there should only be 2 or 3 bolts holding the alternator on.
loosen the one or two bolts holding the alternator in place, i believe 14mm, then loosen the 12mm on the adjuster (side) and "screw" the 12mm bolt down to lower the alternator down enough and replace the belt. This is almost the same for every Toyota engine which doesnt use an automatic belt tensioner (serpentine) on the alternator.
On my 94, the tension bar is between the passenger wheel well and the motor, towards the bottom. Use a wrench to lift the tension bar, and the belt should loosen up. On my 95 Corsica 2.2 4cyl, the tension pulley is DOWN and to the LEFT of the alternator pulley. The space in between the bolt on the pulley and the side of the engine compartment is to small for a socket. I used a box wrench and turned CLOCKWISE.
You have to use a 1/2 inch breaker bar and put it in the square hole of the tensioner and turn it to release the tension of the belt.
Release tension at automatic tensioner use a breaker bar and socket
before you do anything with the alternator, make sure to unplug the battery. Then unplug the cables going into the alternator. There should be two. For the belt there is an engine part called a pulley - lift the pulley upwards to loosen the belt and take it off the alternator. Next you can unscrew the bolts attaching the alternator and take it out.
I have a 97 Ford probe and when I had to replace my alternator... I had to pulled the passenger tire off and pull the whole assembly apart so I could get the alternator.. There are 2 bolts to loosen up and pull the belt out slide the alternator down by the exhaust and pull it out by the CV axle
It's not fun. Look at the upper radiator hose, where it curves to the engine behind the alternator. Drain your coolant, loosen the alternator support bracket and move the alternator away as much as you can. The thermostat is hidden down there.
you need a serpentine belt tool, you can get one at auto zone or any part store. the alternator is on a pully system with a belt tensioner. place the tool in the tensioner and pull down, this releases the tension and the belt should come off. besure that you have the proper routing diagram and the correct belt for your engine size and year. Also if you don't want to buy s serpentine belt tool, you can use a 15MM wrench.
Cavalier Chocolate was created in 1996.
you loosen the shroud under the quarter panel, behind the tire. Then with (skinny) arms you reach through and change it.
