On Microsoft PowerPoint 2007, double click on the picture, go to recolor, go all the way down to the bottom, click set transparent color, and click on the background color you want it to match! :) I just figured that out today! :))

In Photoshop Elements 7.0

Go to File>New>Blank File (or at the same time press ctrl+N). A dialogue box will pop-up and you will fill out the fields appropritately. At the bottom of the box, there is a drop down menu titled Background Contents. Click on this drop down menu and select transparent.

Once you have created the new file and have it opened, Go to your Adobe Organizer, or where ever you have your photographs stored and open it in the Adobe editor.

What you will want to do, is to select the Rectangular Marqee Tool on the sidebar menu (It looks like a rectangle made with dotted lines.

Then roughly select the area of the picture you want to keep.

At the menus at the top of the screen Go to Select>Inverse.

Then select your Background Eraser Tool and use it to remove the background on the parts you don't want to keep. It will only erase in the area you selected so don't worry too much about neatness.

If you want selected elements of a picture, you can then refine your search by using the Magic Wand to select your areas and erase from there.

If you make a mistake all you have to do is go to Edit>Undo. But make sure you perform this as soon as you make a mistake because it will only delete the last action you just performed.

Although you can use Eraser tools to erase pixels from image I will recommend to mask portion of image that you want to be transparent.

What does the opicaty option do in Photoshop?

Opacity is the transparency of your layer that is featured. It is useful for safe editing in Photoshop, opacity is used to 'dim down' a certain object and is commonly used in masking to see layers behind the layer that uses opacity. Higher opacity will make the layer more opaque. Lower opacity will make the layer more transparent. Hope this helps :)
