we obtain carbon by Hetero meaning other (as opposed to homo or auto meaning same) and -troph which deals with nutrition or eating are the two parts you need to understand. An autotroph makes its own food (like a tree). A A heterotroph cannot make its own food and or need to obtain its food from somewhere else than its own biochemical machinery. So basically, like was already said: by eating. Humans (heterotrophs) obtain carbons mostly from carbohydrates (sugars) and fats. So eating a nice chocolate bar will grant you lots of carbon (although likely in excess.) Just think of any organism that needs to "eat." Then, think of what it eats.

If you are looking for the processes by which heterotrophs extract "useful" carbon from their food, then...well then its more complicated.

A cheaper alternative is to buy some carbon-black, or pure graphite.

Fullerene, buckminsterene, graphene (discoverers are Nobel-prize winners 2010!) are other possibilities, but not available at a common drugstore.
