It's a personal thing. Some cannot get over the taste of alcohol instantly hitting their tongue and will refuse to drink any more for the rest of their lives, or they try to force themselves to like it, or take it the natural way and slowly tasting the different parts of the liquor other than just the ethanol (the best skill to have but takes a long time to get right).
If anything, if it permits, you can add a dash of water and slowly sip the liquor and taste the other flavors in the liquor that you wouldn't have had tasted because of the ethanol if you had just drank it neat (This process is generally applied to whisky, but uncertain for other liquors).
