That is called CAPTCHA which an acronym for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart". It is a type of challenge-response test to prove you are human and not a computer bot intended to spam a website. Requiring CAPTCHA cuts down on spam, links to porn sites, links to malware sites, etc.

A CAPTCHA is a type of challenge-response test used in computing to determine that the user is not run by a computer. The process involves one computer (a server) asking a user to complete a simple test which the computer is able to generate and grade. Because other computers are unable to solve the CAPTCHA, any user entering a correct solution is presumed to be human. A common type of CAPTCHA requires that the user type the letters of a distorted image, sometimes with the addition of an obscured sequence of letters or digits that appears on the screen. The most common CAPTCHA device is to present an image of letters slightly distorted so an optical reader cannot make them out, but the human mind still can. The human recognizes each letter and types it in in the order presented to prove he is in fact human.
There can be many ways, but the first you would study at college would be the "Turing Test" and most widely adopted in real-world applications is a CAPTCHA.Did not you see somewhere, filling a web form, a sentence like "Please write the code in the image below" close to a weird image? That was a CAPTCHA!Wikipedia link provided.
That depends on your scanner and the acquisition process. My scanner does. Or if I use IrfanView to acquire a scanner image, the image loads into IrfanView from the scanner and I save it to disk from IrfanView.

J.K. Rowling uses this simile to create a vivid image that conveys the intensity of the red rubies' color. By comparing the rubies to glowing coals, she emphasizes their brightness and warmth, adding depth to the description of whatever is being compared to them.
The poet uses the string of days image to convey the gradual passing of time in Beowulf's life, emphasizing the inevitability of his impending death. This image creates a sense of rhythm and continuity, highlighting the fleeting nature of human existence and adding a poetic depth to the idea of Beowulf's mortality.
show me what 4mm look like on a ruler. Compare 4mm to another image, like a bug or a dime, or a string etc.

Capctha is used to avoid the online form filling data through a software or bot which is not human. It is used to promote manual submission by a human. Other software or bot cannot read the text in the captcha image so bulk submission or spamming through robot software can be stopped.
