It all depends on what shape the pool is.

Rectangle : L X W X Height

Free-form pools like kidneys etc, need a lot more detailing.

L plus W plus H

The way you would do this is by measuring from the inside on the wall, to the opposite side, inside on the wall. Do this in both direction on the pool. Most people measure from top rail to top rail, this gives them a wrong measurement. Let's say you have a 15x30 oval, you would measure from inside to inside, on the wall to get you measurements. To determine the height of above ground pools, you will measure from the bottom track to the top of the wall. Let's say it is 52"

so you would have a 15x30x52 pool. Just a little side note, not every above ground pool is exactly a perfect measurement, saying that a 15x30 might read 14'8"x30'4" but in turn it will be a 15x30 foot pool.

You need to measure the length and width (for ovals) or the diameter (rounds) and check that that measurement is consistent We also like to have the perimeter of the pool. To do that you usually need a cloth tape measure, about a 100 foot long should work, and you measure around the top on the steel wall, under the top rail, where the liner overlaps (for overlap pools) or the bead clips in (for beaded pools). The wall height, distance from the top of the cove or sand bottom to the top of the wall (where the overlap or bead receiver is).

It depends on what type of cover you are wanting to cover you pool with.

1) Solar Cover....They are sold precut to standard sized pools. If you don't have a standard size pool, get one that is just barely larger than your pool and cut it with a pair of scissors to fit your pool. It should float on your pool's water, bubble side down.

2) Winter Cover...they are also sold precut to standard sized pools. If you have an irregular shaped pool ( Kidney, Lazy-L, etc) find the rectangle cover that will completely cover your pool + about 12". Fold up the excess and then use water tubes to completly hold down the cover around the pool's edge.

3) Safety Cover They are made to fit std sizes too. But nearly all of them have some customization to them. Steps are on shallow end in Middle or left or right side...but could be ofset by 1-4ftt Usually you would want one that is customized to fit your pool.

To measure a free-form pool line start by measuring from a corner to the finished depth. Measure the width by starting from the bead to the coping.

How much pool liner do you allow at top for overlap pools?

That normally depends on where you are getting the liner from, but in most cases, you measure the pool diameter and actual pool wall height. When you order the liner, let the liner manufacturer know the liner is for an above-ground pool with an overlap liner. The liner manufacturer will then make the pool wall enough longer to allow several inches of liner material to fold over the top of the pool wall and anchor it in place with the liner locking strips.

Is a rectangular shaped pool easier to clean than a freeform pool?

no not necessarily. if the walls of a free form pool are steep enough that debris sinks to one area, then it is easy to do a weekly maintenance on. however, every so often you need to vacuum the whole liner, or brush it down with a wall brush to ensure cleanliness. my opinion . no not at all.

How do you get the Measurements for a round above pool for a new liner?

The easiest way is to simply measure across the pool as close to the center line as you can. Also, measure from several different spots to get the closest average. If you need the measurement for around the outside of the pool the you would want to measure the diameter (the distance from one side to the other) as close to the center as you can and multiply that distance (in inches) time 3.1415. For example, if the pool measure 12 feet across (144 inches) then the distance around the pool would be 452.3 inches. The pool liner supplier will most likely just need the diameter and the height of the pool.

How do different color liners affect blueness of pool water?

The pool water draws its color from the liner. If you buy a white liner, then the pool water will not be blue. If you use a light blue liner, then the pool will be light blue. In my opinion, the best liner is a darker blue liner with ripples on it. Your pool will look gorgeous and inviting and the ripple effect makes it difficult to see any dirt in your pool. A solid color liner lets you see everything, which isn't always pretty.
