Measuring the Mass of a Rock You use a scale to weigh the rock, next you put a certain amount of water in a container, next you add the rock to the water and subtract the current water level from the original water level, the weight of the rock divided by the amount of water it displaced is the mass.

The mass of a rock sample is measured placing the sample on an adequate balance !

The unit of mass in SI is the kilogram (kg) and the derived unit for density is kg/m3 (g/cm3 is also accepted). Do not confuse mass with weight.
