How do you modify an ACDelco part 89018436 blower motor resistor to fit a 1996 GMC Safari?

Installing this part in a 1998 GMC Safari or Chevy Astro requires enlarging the hole in the duct where the resistor is mounted. I did this using a utility knife with a new blade installed. I don't think that it is possible to safely modify the resistor module to fit in the hole provided when the vehicle was manufactured.
