∙ 6y agoYou need to take two important precautions for malware (this includes virus, and other harmful software, which is sometimes called a "virus", but which technically isn't one).1) You need to install protective software; ESPECIALLY an antivirus. You can get free options from AVG and Avast; they both also offer commercial (paid) licenses, with more options; or you can get a paid antivirus from other companies. Windows also includes a built-in antivirus called "Windows Defender"; if you want to use that one, just make sure it is active.
2) Since you can't be 100% sure that you'll avoid EVERY virus, you should make backup copies of your data. Copy anything you don't want to lose to some external storage. For example, an external hard disk with a capacity of 1 TB or more isn't too expensive these days; these are plugged into the USB port. And make sure that after making the copy, the external hard disk is NOT plugged into the computer. Otherwise, some malware may damage BOTH your main hard disk and the backup.
