you can prevent oil spills by also preventing pollution. also before you start fueling, defueling, internal transfer etc.. make sure you check to make sure it is tight and there are no leaking glands. also you can use less electricity. so by turning off the lights in your house when your not in that room or something they are using less oil to make that electricity!!!!

Oil drilling companies should use automatic shut-off device installed in the main pipe where the oils pass going up....this would prevent the oil spill when there is an accident at the platform

To contain the oil spill people who like to help can collect the oil and sell the oil back to the British petroleum with premium price to speed up the clean up of the oil from the water...it will be like an open mine for people who like to volunteers...and be paid... you can stop oil spills by not polluting the oceans!

The Spill onto the Washington Mall rally grew out of the collective action taken against BP as a result of the explosion. First, we started boycott pages on Facebook. Then we took to the streets, gas stations, and beaches. After many of the boycott managers got to know each other, we thought that more needed to be done. The rally grew out of those conversations.

We never ask who anyone votes for or what party anyone usually backs. We realize it's time for us to stop seeing each as enemies enemies, and that partisanism is a strategy to keep us divided. All are welcome no matter the background, skin color, age, religion, sexual orientation, family status, disability, gender, or species. Bring your children, signs without sticks, tents, food, and voices.

We will meet on the Ellipse, in Washington D.C., next to the White House, from the morning of September 3rd until the morning of the 5th keeping the president's kids up, sorry girls, with speakers, bands, workshops, the Wall of Shame Gallery of bp posters, kids' tents, tabling and more.

We will no longer take a Washington that is so infiltrated by corporate control that we no longer know exactly who runs this country. We will tell them how to vote on bills, and expect strong legislation that suits the will of the people not wealthy campaign contributors and law makers with conflicts of interests between their money sources and the people. BP, you've become the poster child of corporate waste, abuse, incompetence, greed, and class divide.

Gulf residents have begun evacuating of their own accord due to the health effects of toxic air. Let's go for them, the animals, and the planet.

Oil rigs spills are going to happen no matter what cautions and procedures are in place. As long as humans are involved in the process. Nature has also cause some major oil slicks also. Drilling has relieved pressure from some of these cracks and reduced natural "spills".

What needs to be in place is safety procedures and containment capabilities that can be implemented quickly and correctly. These procedures and precautions need to be enforced with stiff and quick fines if violated.

we can prevent oil spills by transporting oil in another way rather than by boat. it is also okay to transport it by boat. the ship liners crew should just be careful in handling them. because everytime an oil spill occurs in does not only affect the place but also the people in that place and also the living things in the sea or ocean. fishes die. coral reefs are destroyed. lots of people suffer. :)

Oil spills occur in many different ways- pipe line breaks, barges capsizing, tanker accidents, storage tanks leaking, production platform accidents and well blowouts. The two most famous spills are the Exxon Valdez oil spill caused by a tanker accident and the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico caused by a blowout.

It is difficult to generalize on how an oil spill might be prevented. In tanker accidents, one of the recommendations was to build safer tankers with double hulls. The current focus in the US is how to make drilling deepwater exploratory wells in a safer manner. Deepwater exploratory wells require a more complex design.

Wells blow out and pipelines fail at times because of faulty plans. In particular, well blow outs occur because the engineering design did not include all possibilities. In the Macondo well blowout, it appears that the cement used was not well tested, and could not stand up against the high pressures of the formation.

Some experts feel that the oil industry should be more regulated. You may find this recommendation in the National Commission on the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

A bit of definition. An oil release which is contained without contact with vulnerable parts of the environment is not an "oil spill" for the purposes of this question.Oil spills are prevented by

• having a risk assessment survey done and kept up to date
• promotong a spill prevention culture at the site or company
• proper equipment management and maintenance including periodic surveys and tests
  
• having ongoing direct frequent human observation of the systems
  
• by installing loss identification systems on tanks lines and other equipment
  
• dyking or otherwise containing areas where oil losses may occur
  
• having shut off valves either automatically automated or in fail safe position
  
• having emergency response programs (staff, equipment, action plan etc) inlace
  
• having replacement equipment on standby
  

There are similar lists for responding to a oil loss which has become an "oil spill". Many of the items are similar but reflect the changes nature of equipment and planning.
