Not really, other than surgery. But there are treatments and behavior modifications that can be used to lessen its impact on a dog. Weight management, exercise, physical therapy, and glucosamine/chondriotin are some of these steps. Click on the 'Hip Dysplasia' link on this page to learn more.

hip dysplasiaOne cure is surgery. If is the avenue of choice for your pocket book, it can be expensive. If it is caught early, our vet told us to make sure our dog got plenty of exercise. Strengthing the muscles helps keep the ball and joint closer together. Hip dysplasia can be extremely painful for dogs, so if this is your dogs problem, take him to the vet for a check up. They do have medication that will make your dogs life much more pleasent.

Another answer:

A few dogs i have observed with hip dysplasia have been alright without surgery, but it would be a good idea to try surgery. If the damage/pain is still low enough to where the dog does not lose its ability to walk and swim, you may think of asking a veterinarian if strengthening the leg is an option.

Also:

our dog takes glucosamine tablets and will be on them for practically life. It has made his life a whole lot better. the glucosamine helps to rebuild the cartilage on the ball and socket joint. i would recommend trying this before surgery.

First and foremost, all breeding stock should be carefully screened for hip and elbow displasia before being used for breeding. Both the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals and the PennHIP programs provide displasia screening for a reasonable fee. If only dogs screened and found to be free of displasia are bred, the frequency of the disease can be significantly reduced. Currently, twenty-five percent of German Shepherds tested show some form of displasia. Once a dog has been diagnosed a veterinarian can make recommendations on which treatment or treatments are best for that individual dog. Surgery may or may not be recommended. Glucosamine may or may not be recommended. A dog with hip displasia should not be allowed to jump. He should not be exercised hard, but should receive mild exercise daily. Having no exercise will cause him to deteriorate more quickly.

No you shouldn't. Hip dysplasia is common in this breed, and many breeds are trying to breed it out by on breeding dogs with low hip scores. If you dog already has hipdysplasia, then its puppies have a lot great of a chance of getting the condition too.

Sometimes they do have to have surgery. First your Veterinarian would x-ray the hips and see how bad they are. Medication would be given first to try to control the pain & limping. Sometimes it is not enough and surgery has to be done to fix the hip. Picture the hips like a ball & socket. The ball has to fit into the socket nice and tightly. Sometimes the ball is shaped all wrong with rough edges on it and sometimes the socket is shallow. Called the femoral head & acetabulum. Only your Veterinarian can help you with this.

Yes. Dogs can die from hip dysplasia especially when not detected and treated immediately. This condition can be diagnosed by x-Ray or hip scoring tests. Treatment can be either medication when condition is mild or surgery when it is severe.

You can't prevent hip dysplasia. It's genetic. And what ever you do DON'T breed it! The puppies will have a very high chance of being born with it.

What if your German Shepard is breed and has hip dsplasia will this hurt her give birth?

She shouldn't have puppies if she has that! It's a severe illness and will be passed onto the poor puppies, let the line... if there is one... die.The reason for breeding a dog is to BETTER the breed. Hip Dysplasia is hereditary so would be passed on in the genes to the next generations. You do not want to breed a dog with hip dysplasia. You should always have your dogs OFA certified against hip dysplasia before breeding them and elbow dysplasia too. If they do not pass the OFA requirements, then they should not be bred.
