By protecting the bamboo environments they live in. Pandas need food, space, low stress and access to mates. If they are forced to live in small pockets of bamboo forests surrounded by mankind, they may have limited food, small areas to roam, enhanced stress from nearby noise, pollution, or industrial interference, and if their environments are separated from each other, they may not be able to reach enough potential mates to keep their gene pool varied enough to be viable (a problem with the cheetah population)

To prevent the giant panda from becoming extinct, mankind needs to learn to live without converting all the panda homelands into human spaces.

Some other elements that can help is personnel to monitor the panda areas that have the strength to enforce the laws applicable to the protection of the habitat and animal health professionals to periodically monitor and test for conditions that could be detrimental to the pandas.

Some nations that have had problems with human encroachment and interference in valuable preserves and habitats found that it was often because the people were poor and needed timber for firewood, space for planting a food source, to hunt meat and to sell fur and other animal products. A few of these countries decided that to protect the habitats, they needed first to give the humans a way to live without damaging the treasures at their doorsteps. Depending on where this took place and the wisdom of the officials, certain areas were set aside for people to live and grow some crops, assist to set up a chain for commerce of their extra crops, handicrafts and other legal goods that the local people could produce. This meets their human needs and affords them the means to buy additional things necessary, like fuel. Some enlightened officials have trained and hired local people to work as control monitors which provides their communities with some salaried members, and a personal stake in the outcome of their protected areas.

It is important to have laws in place to protect these areas and official monitoring and empowerment because no matter how cooperative the local people can be, even they are powerless against outsiders that are intent on destroying animals and vegetation for commercial purposes.

People not personally connected to these areas can research what the problems are for the specific area that they are concerned about; assist groups or organizations that are working to ensure the appropriate protection laws are in place; assist the local people in convincing the governments controlling these areas have a priority to take care of the areas under their control; find the international organizations with goals that are paralell to your own and find out what you can do to assist their efforts. And of course what everyone can do, that is not to buy or trade in any goods that can be considered from endangered sources. If you know how, to report the trade in such goods to the appropriate authority that can take action.

Unfortunately, there is no 'one size fits all' laws, regulations, or solutions for problems associated with endangered speicies. Each individual situation needs to be evaluated and addressed individually.
