Patent does not apply to writing. That's for inventions. You are probably thinking of copyright.
You can register your novel with the U.S. Copyright office and pay a fee, or you can just append a copyright statement to it. The copyright statement signifies your intent to be covered under international copyright law. The copyright statement takes this form: Copyright (c) year name. The word "copyright" can appear in addition to the copyright symbol (c in a circle) or by itself, and the (c) symbol is also enough by itself. This is not a necessary step on the way to publication. If you get your book published by a real publisher, copyright ownership will be part of the contract. If you self-publish, you will certainly want to hold onto your copyright, which is the right to reproduce and distribute the work.
But--how do you publish it? That's the big question. You have choices:
* Submit it to a commercial publishing house, who will accept it or reject it--probably reject it. There are thousands and thousands of hopeful authors who will never accomplish this. * Submit it to an agent who will submit it to a commercial publishing house, unless, as is most likely, the agent rejects it. * Self-publish it through one of several channels, including print-on-demand online services. Before you do any of these things, you might want to let a professional editor have a go at it. This will cost you, but it will also greatly improve your chances.
If you are serious, go to the library and look up the many how-to resources, from a hefty annual called The Writer's Marketplace to monthly magazines for writers. Do online research. And join a writers' club or organization where you can learn about things like this and meet other authors who have the same goals.
