A horse shoe needs to be properly fitted by a qualified farrier with a forge and the correct tools. If you do not have this training you should not do it yourself as you could seriously hurt the horse. However a horseshoe is typically shaped by the farrier with a forge and hammer then 'hot fitted' to the hoof to show where it sets on the hoof. Then if the shoe is a good match to the hoof the farrier will line it up again and begin placing the nails in the slots on the bottom of the shoe and drive them into the hoof wall. Once that is finished he will snip off the ends and file them down smooth.

In real life they will make the metal and then they will tie the horse to some bars with ropes, don't worry it won't hurt them. then they take the horse shoe and sometimes they melt it on to the hoof and sometimes they nail it on which just gives them a little bit more pain.

Another Answer:

The horses' hoof is the same as the human fingernail or toenail. It has no feeling in it, except at the root. The red hot shoe is placed against the hoof to provide a perfect fit. This does not hurt the horse at all. The shoe is then cooled and placed back on the hoof. The shoe is then NAILED to the hoof. Once again, this does not cause the horse any pain.

Horses are shod by the farrier thus, starting with the near fore and going round via the near hind:

1. Remove the previous set of shoes

2. Pare back the wall of the foot with pincers then rasp it smooth. Rasp the frog smooth as well

3. Select a shoe that is the correct size for the foot and the correct design for the intended purpose

4. Heat the shoe in the forge and press it against the hoof to check for fit

5. If the shoe fits the foot, it is then cooled in water then nailed onto the foot. Not all the holes in the shoe are used. The nail runs through the wall of the foot and emerges on the outside, where the clench is knocked back and twisted off

6. If the shoe doesn't fit the foot it is put back into the forge and worked on the anvil (hence the expression to "strike while the iron is hot", the term "iron" being the French for shoe ("fer"). It is then pressed against the foot again to check for fit

7. This process is repeated as many times as is necessary. The shoe is always made to fit the foot and not vice versa unless there is a problem with the foot and the vet has instructed the farrier to make special shoes (surgical shoeing) and to shape the foot to improve it

8. Once each shoe is fitted, the farrier finishes off by rasping the outside of the hoof to smooth it off.

Horses are usually shod every 4-6 weeks but if they have not worked on metalled roads the shoes can often be taken off and refitted after the hooves have been pared back. Young horses are usually first shod on their hind feet for a few days in their second year, just to get them used to the idea of being shod.

Wishing on a horse shoe used to be commonplace. The horseshoe was pointed up like a cup to keep the "good luck" from pouring out. To make a wish, touch the shoe and make the wish, but don't let the shoe tip all the good luck back out.

Mainly an anvil and hammer. You might want to research it more though. ;)
