The lever that connects the handle to latch has come loose. I had this happen to me out on a job site and all my tools were in the back. Jeep has no interior latch for the liftgate so you have to jimmy the lock to open it, then reconnect the lever which has an attached side clip holding it on. I think you can get to this lever by taking the tag lights out. It's been a few years since this happened to me. Once you reconnect the lever, you can secure it by wrapping some electrical tape around the lever ends or use a tie wire. I also connected a stiff wire to the latch lever and ran it out of the rear glass molding on the inside and twisted a loop on the end. This creates a permanent lever to pull and open the rear from the inside.
A better way that doesnt damage the exterior is to simply pop off the plastic interior panel of the liftgate and just take the disconnected link in hand and firmly pull it to open the gate. At the same time you can reconnect it. From the factory there is a retainer clip that holds the link in place. It isn't uncommon for these to come off or break due to harsh use or when excessive force is applied to the handle on the exterior of the lift gate.
At the bottom of the dooron the insideyou will find a quarter size access plug. Remove it and you will find the manual release almost straight in. Push with a screwdriver and lift.
The pin that holds the handle to the latch is probably broken. You will need to disassemble the door and put in a new pin. There is a small square panel on the inside of your rear lift gate. If you remove the panel you will see a switch that will allow you to turn the locking mechanism on or off. Sometimes it can accidentally get switched off from heavy bumps or off road drinving. Flip the switch and you should be good.
no liftgate release on these suburbans, the relay is on the passenger side pillar at the bottom, near the floor. and yes you will have to pull the plastic off. it is a standard 5125 relay to replace. about 5-10 bucks.
Try to find the cable that the hood release would normally pull, you might have to remove some panels. Try pulling that with a vice grips.
Don't think you can I've pulled the panel off and looked at everything but there dosent seem to be a manual release. Stupid design if you ask me I'm dealing with the same issue now let me know if you find an answer.
If power door locks equipped, then unlock doors. If not, then use key in liftgate. Now feel around in the recess (with your hand facing you) above the license plate in the center of the liftgate. You should feel a rubbery surface slightly raised. Pull with fingertips and the liftgate should swing out and upwards. To close, pull the liftgate down and push closed. Most models will latch and relock automatically.
