How do you remove Trojanhorse Downloader Small 8 AK from your system if AVG cannot?

This worked on every computer I've been asked to fix so far:

1. Locate the filename of the virus.

2. Terminate the process in the process tree (on XP: Ctrl+Alt+Del -> Task Manager -> Processes) by selecting the filename of the virus and press 'End task'.

I'm not sure on the names since I'm on a Swedish language of Windows XP.

Further on,

3. Start Menu -> Run..Enter "regedit" and navigate via the trees on the left to:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> Microsoft -> Windows -> CurrentVersion -> Run

In the right field you will have to locate the filename of the virus again, i.e. if the filename for the virus is "css.exe" (check YOUR filename!!) and is located in C:\Windows (note that this is an EXAMPLE, it can be located anywhere!!), then the Data column will have a value like "C:\Windows\css.exe"

The name of the row/value can vary.

Select the row, and delete it. DO NOT DELETE ANY OTHER ROWS HERE UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DO! THIS CAN CAUSE YOUR COMPUTER SERIOUSLY!!

Simply close the Registry Editor, reboot and follow step 3 to locate the "Run"-directory in the registry, to see if you see the file there again.. If it is, do it in other orders (since it adds itself back in a variable time)

Scan your computer and be happy without Trojan horses! :)

PLEASE!!! Do This First!!

In reply to " by Christian Svenberg" and to save yourself a whole lot of headache, make a back-up of your registery first. Christian gives us great information but make sure you back-up first just in case you run into a problem.

To back-up do the following.

Open RegEdit as Christian explains, click on My Computer in the left pain high-lighting it. Go to File|Export this will open a window that typically will be pointing to My Documents. Create a file name, I usually use todays date. Then click save. This make take a few minutes depending on how much money you decided to spend on a PC (little joke). Once finished preform Christians fix.IF you run into a problem and your registrey is hosed, open up RegEdit got to File|Import and selct the backup you created earlier.

Have a good one!
