To remove the spare tire on a Mercury Mariner insert the jack handle into the hole provided on the rear bumper of the vehicle. Turn the jack handle clockwise to lower the spare from underneath the vehicle.
It will be necessary to remove the front license plate and bracket. Remove license plate from bracket. Using a 3/16" drill bit, drill out the two pop rivets that hold the bracket to the bumper. This is from a a bull bar installation guide for a 2008 Ford Escape/2008 Mercury Mariner.

The alternator is located behind the inner fender well on the passenger side. Must remove tire and splash guard to see it.
The broken bolt can be blown out by someone who knows how to use a torch - muffler-shop
the thermostat on most mercury's is located just above the muffler. must remove exhaust pipe and muffler to reach thermostat. good luck.
under the heat shield. remove the heat shield and it will be sticking out right above the exhaust headers.

Remove the wheel, axle and drop the exhaust and pull it out. It sounds so easy..... It took me almost 7 hours!!!
You have to remove the cross over section of the exhaust
If you can grab it with a pair of vice grips or even a pipe wrench and get it out then you could replace it. If that will not work you will have to buy an easy out and use that to remove the stud.
