How do you remove black plastic cover over alternator wires next to valve cover on 1996 Toyota Camry with 2200 4 cylinder so you can replace the valve cover gasket Can't get valve cover off?
remove the "dog bone" engine mount. then the 2 upper 10mm bolts on the timing belt cover. this will allow you to pull the harness out of the way to remove the cover.
Answer i do know on early 90's was over passenger side tire Now here's an update to the answer above from another user: If it is the 22R series 4 cylinder engine, Toyota has it on the driver's side. I had to replace an alternator bracket on an 82 Toyota - the salvage yard sold me an improved version off a 1992 Toyota truck. So this information is also good for those who have trucks…
You need to disconnect the battery, after that remove plastic and metal cover underneath the steering wheel. After that you get access to the key cylinder, disconnect the harness, remove nuts. Install a new key cylinder, tighten the nuts, connect the harness to. Install the plastic and metal cover. Connect the battery. You might want to try the cylinder before installing plastic cover.
loosen the one or two bolts holding the alternator in place, i believe 14mm, then loosen the 12mm on the adjuster (side) and "screw" the 12mm bolt down to lower the alternator down enough and replace the belt. This is almost the same for every Toyota engine which doesnt use an automatic belt tensioner (serpentine) on the alternator.
You need to remove the panel located underneath the steering wheel. There are basically two panels one on top of each other. The first one is plastic and it's attached with plastic holders (easy to break them), and another one is made of metal and usually attached with 4 bolts. When you remove the panels, you will be able the get access to the ignition cylinder.
Check fuses first. If fuses are good, check the voltage from the negative battery cable to where the wire bolts onto the back of the alternator. (With the engine running). If you can't reach the back of the alternator, then measure across the posts of the battery. Voltage should be about 14 volts DC. If lower than that, replace the alternator. When you replace an alternator, it's a good idea to replace the battery, as…
Not sure if 1991 and 1989 is same Not sure if the alternator is under your right front seat on a 1989 model, but it is on 1991. You need to remove the seat and the top under the seat to get proper access. When that is done, it is easy removal of the alternator. You will see that the alternator is self explainable.
