First, do not stick anthing smaller than your elbow in your ear (i.e. don't stick anything in your ear in attempt to get it out). There is an over the counter medication called Debrox which can assist in liquifiying the hardened/dry ear wax so that you can remove is safely (with a clean, wet washcloth on the external part of your ear or with warm water from a syringe - don't stick it in!). There are other similar medications - just make sure it contains carbamide peroxide. Often, this is not enough. The doctor can remove impacted wax with a cerumen spoon (but only the doctor should do this or your risk damage to your ear drum).

You can also try warm water, never, ever hot, applied gently via a rubber ear syringe from your local pharmacy. But again and emphasized, talk to your local doctor. As a teener, I went thru excessive earwax buildup, which at times rendered me nearly deaf. Also very good advice above, I've had extremely painful inner ear infections from anything other than mild methods and solutions. Don't go there. Your ear contains many tiny bones that cannot be replaced.
