Before you remove the gas tank from a 1981 F-100 pickup you must first ensure that there is less than one quarter of a tank of gas in the vehicle. Remove the fuel neck by opening the gas door and unbolting the neck using a torques head socket. Push the fuel neck inward. Unbolt the bed from the body of the truck which is typically held in place with 6 to 8 bolts. Disconnect all wiring which runs from the back of the bed to the chassis of the vehicle. Lift and remove the bed from the truck with assistance. Disconnect the fuel line located on the top of the fuel tank. Unbolt the mounting straps that hold the gas tank in place. You may want to have adequate support for the weight of the tank when it drops down.
Remove the filler neck hose from the tank and insert a syphon hose into the tank.
Drop the fuel tank or remove the bed.

I've heard it's faster to remove the pickup bed than remove the fuel tank. Once you have access to the top of the fuel tank, the pump can be removed from the tank.

Not sure what model pickup you have but for the most part the fuel tank has to be removed to gain access to the fuel pump. Some folks prefer to remove the truck bed instead of dropping the tank. Myself, I would drop the tank.

you have to remove the fuel lines going to the top of the tank. then drop the tank. then turn the retaining ring on top and remove it. then you can pull the float/pump assembly and repair or replace. it's built together.
I took the bed off (held on by 6 nuts), and then removed the gas tank, which is held on by 6 nuts). Was pretty simple actually. Was able to remove the pump and clean the tank thoroughly.
