How do you remove gas tank from 1981 f100 pickup?
Before you remove the gas tank from a 1981 F-100 pickup you must first ensure that there is less than one quarter of a tank of gas in the vehicle. Remove the fuel neck by opening the gas door and unbolting the neck using a torques head socket. Push the fuel neck inward. Unbolt the bed from the body of the truck which is typically held in place with 6 to 8 bolts. Disconnect all wiring which runs from the back of the bed to the chassis of the vehicle. Lift and remove the bed from the truck with assistance. Disconnect the fuel line located on the top of the fuel tank. Unbolt the mounting straps that hold the gas tank in place. You may want to have adequate support for the weight of the tank when it drops down.
There are usually 2 or 3 straps around the tank. You can remove the adjusting bolts and the straps will open. Make sure you have a floor jack or something else to support the tank when you remove the straps. Once the straps are off and the fill tube has been disconnected, lower the tank just a little so that you can get to the electrical and fuel line connections.
