I just finished replacing the motor in a 1996 grand marquis. When I removed the starter the bottem bolt was easy. the top two sucked. I used a long shocket wrench that flexes on the end with a MM socket. I cant remember the size but use the bottem bolt to find out. Maybe 13mm? After the socket I use a universal which i wrapped in electric tape to make it stiffer. Then two long extentions with another universal wrapped in electric tape to stiffen it too. I came in from the front of the engine by the fan. I was laying under the car and snaked it from the front over the axle back to the starter to the bolts. Its hard to see the very top bolt so I had to do it by feel. I had the fan, belt, radiator, and the black rubber shield covering the area at the bottem of the fan removed since I was taking the motor out. All You need is to remove that black rubber/plastic shield so you can snake the extensions and socket back to the starter bolts. I also had the air conditioning unit unbolted and laying up out of the way so I could bolt it back easier to the new engine. This might be in your way of doing it like I did if its left bolted on the engine.

When I put the starter back on i was worried about getting the bolts back in but I got the bottem bolt started and then put the other two bolts in w/ my fingers and then tighten them the same way I took them out. When taking them out I also use a two foot pipe slipped over the handle to give me a little more torque. Hope this helps some one. I played with it 2 days before I figured this out then it went pretty quick.
