There it is, "remove alternator mount bracket" with no advice on how to do it. Turns out there is a nut on the bottom inside that attaches to a bolt that is part of the Belt tensioner that goes through the bottom hole. I had to push the alternator all the way to the right to get to it. That is in addition to the other three bolts. I got the bracket off and the alternator out. Have to wait till tomorrow for someone to order the 120A alternator.
The tensioner came off (only held by that one bolt). I hope it goes back O.K. Will try to post an edit tomorrow (7/3/06).
Put it all back together. Worked well. Don't hook the alternater up until ready to bolt back (after mounting bracket). Tensioner went back with no problems. Had to move alternator to far right to get nut started and finger tight on tensioner bolt. Then moved to far left to tighten with 15mm wrench a tiny bit at a time. Good luck and have fun. I did :)
The impossible belt tensioner nut/bolt on the bottom of the alternator bracket does not need to be removed to extract the alternator. Repeat...step away from the nut.
As long as the rest of the alternator bracket is unbolted, you can rock the main bracket back and forth to free the alternator.
You will need to pop loose the windshield washer drain hose to make some more room for removal. Turn the alternator so that the pulley is facing toward you and its two bolt holes are in a vertical position. The alternator should pull right out with little effort.
3.3L and 3.8L Engines The 3.3L and 3.8L engines were equipped with the Nippondenso alternators. 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Remove the alternator drive belt, by relieving the tension on the dynamic tensioner. 3. Loosen the nut on the support bracket at the exhaust manifold, do not remove it. 4. Remove the alternator tensioner/power steering bracket bolt. 5. Remove the tensioner stud nut and remove the tensioner. 6. Remove the alternator mounting bolts. 7. Remove the power steering reservoir from the mounting bracket, do not disconnect the hoses, and position it out of the way. 8. Remove the alternator support bracket bolts. Remove the intake plenum to alternator bracket bolt and remove the alternator support bracket from the engine. 9. Remove the alternator from the engine and disconnect the electrical leads. To install: 10. Install the alternator in position on the engine and connect the electrical leads. 11. Install the alternator support bracket, tighten the retaining bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm). 12. Install the power steering reservoir on the mounting bracket. 13. Install the alternator mounting bolts, tighten the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm). 14. Install the tensioner and tensioner mounting stud. Install the retaining nut on the exhaust manifold. 15. Install the alternator belt, insert a 1/2 in. extension into the square hole in the tensioner and turn the tensioner. Tighten the tensioner bolt. 16. Connect the negative battery cable.
Hi, if you are still looking. gas engine Jetta: remove negative battery cable. remove positive cable on alternator. remove blue wire on alternator. Loosen and remove mounting bracket (on top of alternator) be careful not to lose any of this bolt (very hard to find replacements). Remove alternator belt. REmove lower mounting bolt. Remove from engine. Reverse to install. All done. diesel Jetta: mounting bracket is on the bottom and engine mount is on the top. that's the only difference. same procedure. have fun!
I have a 1993 dodge grand caravan, and have taken the alternator off of the bracket, but it will not fit down the back of the motorand under the fire wall. I have tried to remove the alternator bracket , but it looks as though it is trapped behind the tensioner pulley. I don't see how to remove the pulley bracket and don't know if this will work at all. What a crazy design! I hope someone out there can help.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATIONOn some models, the alternator is mounted very low on the engine. Remove the battery cable, remove right front tire, unbolt strut from hub assy, remove the cv axel and spline shaft, there will be 2 bolts on bottom and 1 bolt on top 14mm, after getting the alternator off there are 3 10 mm bolts on the mounting bracket remove the bolts and mounting bracket then remove the alternator through the gap between the frame and the engine. it takes about 3to 4 hrs to remove and install so have fun its a job
remove core support and cooling fans. this will allow you room to operate. remove top mounting bolt. slide belt off idler pulley. remove mounting bracket located to the right of the alternator. put a wrench on the nut on the backside of the alternator and a ratchet and 3" extension on the front side. remove the bolt. alternator should be ready to disconnect. to replace reverse the process.

To change the alternator; the factory procedure at the dealership says to drop the sub-frame from under the front of the vehicle. Then everything is accessible. This is not necessary.1. Remove the right front tire2. Remove dust pan from right front3. Remove the brake caliper and caliper bracket4. Remove the 2 bolts from the half shaft support bracket5. Remove the half shaft axle assembly6. Remove the serpentine belt7. Remove the 3 bolts holding the alternator in place8. Remove the 3 bolts holding the alternator mounting bracket9. Remove the alternator mounting bracket10. Remove the electrical connection on the alternator.11. The studs that are spot welded on the half shaft bracket will try to keep you from being able to remove the alternator. Put the nuts back on the studs until they are flush with the end. This will protect the threads while you take a straight bar long enough to get past the strut and knock out both studs from the bracket. They are only spot welded on the bracket.The alternator now has enough room by rotating and dropping down to remove through the opening.When re-installing the studs put lock washers on the back side and an O-ring on the front of them all the way up to the bracket so they will stay in place while you line up the axle bracket and get the nuts started.You are on your way to Getting 'ER Done".. !
remove the alternator, remove mounting bolts for steering pump and position aside, remove upper engine mount bolt/nut, support engine with sling, remove the upper engine mount bracket, then finally accessory bracket. whole job with proper tools and equipment takes approx. 5 hours to do. I would not attempt to do this as a driveway repair.

First disconnect the battery, Remove the wire attacked to the alternator bolt,(RED WIRE) remove the wire harness under the post, remove the belt 15mm wrench/socket will be needed for the belt tension pully, remove the top mounting bolt into the alternator thru the mount bracket, remove the lower mounting bolt into the alternator thru the mount brcket, remove the mounting bolt on the back of the alternator. its a simple replacement, to reinstall the alternator put all the mounting bolts back in the belt back on the wire plug back in the (RED WIRE)back on the wire post attack the battery. is also listed in the Haynes manual available at MOST auto part shops.
