try using a strap wrench on the pulley and a wrench on the nut there is a special tool for that if you can borrow one from a local auto shop
To replace..got to take the fan clutch off. Remove hoses. Use permatex when putting new one on. Autozone has fan clutch removal tool. Very helpful. Thanks..good luck
fan clutch is built into water pump,u have to get new water pump.
I replaced the water pump on my 99 Suburban in 2003. It was a fairly simple job. The water pump on a 1999 Chevy suburban can be removed once you remove the radiator fan. Here is a way to remove the fan clutch withouy a fan clutch tool. The trick is to leave the belt on and tight. Take a 1 7/16 inch wrench and put it behind the fan onto the big shaft nut attaching the fan to the water pump. Put it straight up and crack it counterclockwise with a hammer. This should loosen the nut. After that just spin the fan off and the rest is easy. Make sure you clean the old seal off of the engine. It is small and easy to miss.
In some Nissan Pickups of that year, the fan clutch is actually integrated with the water pump as an assembly. Therefore, the fan clutch cannot be separated from the water pump. There are six bolts holding the water pump to the engine block; remove those bolts and the water pump/fan clutch assembly should come out as a unit.
Remove the serpentine belt, pull the radiator fan "shroud", remove the 4 bolts holding the radiator fan clutch to the water pump shaft, find and remove the bolts that hold the water pump to the block. It's often beneficial to purchase the replacement water pump BEFORE you remove it, so that you can see where all of the bolts are. Durng the process, you'll need to remove the occasional radiator hose and other stuff that gets in the way.
If Possible Get rid of your Clutch Fan and go Electric! But to answer the question, remove serpentine belt and use a strap wrench to stop clutch from spinning when you try to remove fan clutch nut from water pump!
-drain coolent -remove serpentine belt -remove clutch fan -remove rad hose going to water pump -unbolt and remove water pump
Unless the fan clutch is bad just remove it with the water pump. Otherwise it is a 36mm fan clutch wrench that most auto parts stores have for rent.
you cant really remove them because they are already separated
AnswerTo remove the clutch fan, undo the bolts that hold it on. Then take a puller and pull it of the shaft. Then you can get at the water pump. Also remember that the fan shroud has to come out first. A fan clutch wrench set would help you.
Disconnect the battery. Using a clutch fan tool, hold the clutch to loosen and remove it. Remove the fan shroud. Drain the radiator. Remove the water pump belt, then the pump. Install the pump and reverse the process to finish the process.
Usually there are 4 nuts holding the clutch and fan on to the water pump shaft. Just pull the nuts, remove the fan clutch and replace it.
