To remove the steering wheel start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal to prevent accidental airbag deployment. Then remove the screws on the backside of the steering wheel to remove the airbag. Disconnect the airbag wiring connectors. It is an open circuit in the drivers airbag. There is a clockspring behind the steering wheel that may be worn. To replace, remove airbag, steering wheel, column covers, and lower dash cover. MAKE SURE WHEELS ARE STRAIGHT. The new clockspring comes centered with a yellow locking tab. Remove that after installing it.

How do you remove the airbag on a 1995 Ford Escort wagon 1.9 in order to replace the gas gauge light?

You shouldn't have to remove the airbag in order to replace the gas gauge light. The steering column is held up by a couple of retaining bolts. Remove these bolts and the steering column will lower enough that instrument panel will come out easier. The steering column won't drop to the floor when you do this but will hang in midair. If you have a tilt wheel, you might have to adjust the wheel tilt to allow the panel to come out easier. Don't forget to remove the steering column cover though.

Where is turn signal switch on 98 explorer?

In the steering column. You'll have to remove the steering wheel with a steering wheel puller tool. This can be a dangerous repair job due to the airbag in the steering wheel. Get a Haynes or Chilton's manual for the details on how to do this as well as how to disarm the airbag system.

Does replacing the steering column fixthe airbag?

No, the airbag system, and the steering system are completely different. The airbag, in the centre of the steering wheel (i assume) can be replaced. Lets say for example, your vehicle has a crash, and the airbag is deployed, you will need to replace it, and then remove any fault codes from the airbag module (or ECU). If the airbag light is illuminated, but the airbag hasn't deployed, this indicates a general fault (which shouldnt be ignored) Personally id have this investigated by a trained technician, as an exploding airbag isn't something i'd like to be standing next to! SRS systems are complex and rely on a control module, its more electric than it is mechanical, replacing a steering column would just simply; replace the steering column...

Disconnect battery. Wait 10 minutes, then remove airbag module (if equipped) and horn pad. Remove steering wheel. Pull off plastic trim panel below steering column. Turn ignition key to run (not start) and press lock tang to remove lock cylinder. Remove steering column lower shroud. Remove steering column upper shroud. Remove multi-function (turn signal/wiper/hazard) switch. Remove metal 'knee brace' bracket below steering column. Disconnect all affected wiring including wiring to ignition switch. Remove pinch bolt at bottom of steering column. Remove 2 nuts and t bolts mounting steering column. Note that it will now drop down and may pinch fingers or toes. Remove column from vehicle.
