WEll, not for sure about the '97 but I've begun refurbishing my '95, still get 35+ mpg @ 150k+ mi. :) This also applies to a '99.
At any rate. I had to removed everything in the car that touched the liner. All of the plastic body trim inside from the front window to the back window. -metal clip/snap in all the trim along the headliner -screws hold both sun visors -plastic clips hold the dome light -screws hold the roof mount handles at each passenger seat (you have to snap back the covers at each end of these handles to reveal the screw)
These pieces snap in, yes SNAP in, however it is very tight (they are exactly like the metal fasteners that hold the rear deck panel on. you can see them if you put the seats down and look at the corner)... if you have a very long wide flat blade it should help. The running up the middle of the trim pieces, about every 5 or 8 inches. I did end up breaking a couple of mine off, but it doesn't seem to effect it much as long as it's in the middle, so it seems.
Once you get all the interior trim out of the way, the middle will drop and you carefully, if needed, pull thefront down, should be velcro'd to the roof, then the same on rear end. Now here's the tricky part.. If you are trying to get it out in one piece, you will need to lay both front seats down as flat as possible, scoot the chairs up, they will lay flatter. Open the doors let the liner fall then c*ck it over at an angle and twist it slightly and take it out the door at an angle (my 4 door, it went out the left rear 1st time). easier than it sounds, I tried mine about three different times before I got it just right.
Well good luck!! Drop me a line if you need some tips, I'm eyebrow deep into mine... going to look into overhauling the engine soon. Have Fun
You have to take off the door handle. You have to disengage the door locking mechanism from the door handle, then unscrew the panel and take it off.
The door handle unhinges from the locks and from the window controls. If your windows are electric, just unsnap the cord attached and leave it hanging out. You may have to work with the door handle as it won't come out of the slot very easily and you don't have a lot of room. A flat bladed screwdriver with a long metal piece should work to unsnap it.
You will need:
Torx screwdrivers 20 & 25
Philips Screwdriver
Standard screwdriver
6 mm screwdriver-type socket
1: remove the EVIC console. remove the screw (toward the mirror) and just pull down.
2: remove the Visors
3: remove the lights by the back seats & the garment hooks
4: remove the cargo light and the Car Seat hook covers (small std. screwdriver helps)
5: remove A-pillar trim. I have no idea exactly what size those bolts actually are, and the FSM doesn't say anything. I used a 6mm Screwdriver-type socket. Normal ratcheting type sockets won't fit.
6: remove B-pillar upper trim (tip- you don't have to remove it completely, pull the bottom trim panel out, then pull the upper part out with the seatbelt at the bottom-most position, then just slide the trim panel down)
7: remove C-pillar upper trim.
8: remove upper trim around the rear hatch.
9: at this point the headliner should just drop (friend is handy here) although you may have to coax it a little bit. The headliner is removed through the rear hatch.
No pics though, sorry.
Overall, here is how it should go:
1) Disconnect and isolate negative battery cable.
2) Remove left and right sun visor (two T25 screws). Disengage
left and right sun visor retaining clip.
3) Disconnect and remove the overhead console.
4) Open the cap plugs in the left and right A-pillar trim panels
and remove the panel (two screws/10mm wrench).
5) Remove cap plugs from left and right B-pillar trim
panels. Remove one screw each side using a
magnetized T15 driver.
6) Remove T15 shoulder belt turning loop bolts, then
remove the trim panels.
7) Disconnect and remove left and right headliner
grab handles (two T20 screws).
8) Remote left and right C-pillar trim panels
9) Remove upper liftgate trim panels.
10) Remove left and right D-pillar trim panels.
11) Remove two retainers from rear edge of headliner.
Get a manual on it if you want to do it but it is not a job for even apprentice mechanics as leaks are hard to stop when working on the sun roof. I suggest taking it to the auto trim shop.
