To remove the rivets that hold the ignition coil to the bracket:
1. Use a file or grinder to remove the head of the rivet on the bracket.
2, Use a suitable punch and drive the body of the rivet out of the bracket.
the coil is mounted to a bracket with rivets. the bracket is mounted with 2 bolts. unbolt the bracket and drill or grind the rivets out . the new coil comes with mounting screws.
To install an ignition coil on a 1986 Chevy Celebrity: 1. With the ignition off unplug the wire harness from the coil, also remove the coil to distributor wire. 2. Remove the bolts that hold the coil mounting bracket to the intake manifold. 3, The coil should now come off. 4. The new coil comes without the mounting bracket. Therefore you must cut the rivets loose that hold the old coil to the bracket. The new coil should come with screws and nuts to mount it to the old bracket. Mount the coil to the bracket. 5. Position the coil mount onto the intake manifold and bolt it down. 6. Plug the cables and distributor lead back into place.
To replace the ignition coil: Unplug the wires from the coil, take note of how they come out so you can put them back. Unbolt the bracket from the intake manifold. The original coil is riveted to the mounting bracket, the new coil usually comes without the mounting bracket. Next cut the rivets off that hold the old coil to the mounting bracket. The new coil normally comes with bolts to hold it to the old bracket. Install the new coil to the mounting bracket then mount the bracket to the intake manifold. Plug the wires back in.
If your car has the V6 engine the ignition coil is mounted to the intake manifold next to the distributor. First unplug the wires from the coil. Take note of which way they come out so you can put them back. Then take out the bolts that hold the coil in place on the intake manifold. The factory original coil is riveted to the mounting bracket, new coils come without the mounting bracket. You will need to take the rivets out to remove the old coil from the bracket. The new coil come with screws to mount the coil to the bracket Once the coil is mounted to the bracket then put the bracket back on the intake manifold. Plug the wires back in, that should do it.
REMOVAL PROCEDURE Remove the engine cover. Disconnect the spark plug wires at the ignition coils. Disconnect the ignition coil harness connector. Remove the ignition coil mounting bolts. Remove the ignition coil. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE Install the ignition coil to the bracket. Install the ignition coil mounting bolts. NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions. Tighten Tighten the ignition coil mounting bolts to 8 N.m (71 lb in) . Connect the ignition coil harness connector. Connect the spark plug wires at the ignition coils. Install the engine cover.
The coil is held in place by a bracket that is bolted to the head. First remove the coil wire, then remove the two small nuts holding the two small wires. Notice the small wires will only fit one way so you can't mix them up. Then unbolt the bracket from the head, then loosen the screw clamping the bracket to the coil, then slip coil out of bracket. Position the new coil in the same manor as the old one.

Though the distributor gear is a very common wear item on these vans, I would check that. Also might be cheaper to replace the distributor instead of just the gear.
