Depends on engine size but if you have the common 2.8, easiest thing to do is place a jack under the engine and just get tension on it to relax the passenger side engine mount. Remove the mount bolt. Slightly jack engine up, you dont need a whole lot like maybe an inch at most. with starter removed, flip it upside down, and pull it out the front under the exhaust, but over the control arm. you may have to actually remove the mount plate from the engine if it wont quite clear.
The easiest way I have found is to take the motor mount bolt out of the side that the starter is on and put a jack under the engine and jack it up enough to get the starter to fit between the exhaust manifold and fender. This is a little easier than removing the exhaust manifold and taking a chance on breaking a bolt off in the block.
ALSO TRY REMOVING THE TRANS CROSSMEMBER THEN TAKE THE MOTOR MOUNT BOLT OUT, JACK THE MOTOR UP ,YOU WILL HAVE ALL KINDS OF ROOM TO WORK.You must remove the crossmember which is the most work to get to these starters. Much easier with air tools (impact driver) about an hour job to get the crossmemeber and junk around away to work with the starter. The starter is usually two bolts and a shimmy or two. remove them one at a time and lower starter. Repeat the opposite to install.
I had to remove the bell housing to get it off, otherwise it lacked about 1/4 of an inch from being able to remove it.
you remove the right side motor mount off of the motor and take the starter out through the top side behind the smog pump you my have to jack the motor up slightly
