first take the cover for the horn off. there will be a large nut in the center. take that off. there is also three screws around it. take those off and remove the ring they hold on. take a steering wheel puller and connect it onto the steering wheel. turn the center bolt clockwise until the steering wheel comes off. to reinstall the steering wheel, you just have to press it on by screwing the big nut back on.
I replaced the ignition cylinder (switch) on my '87 which is basically the same truck. It was pretty simple once I used a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel . I don't remember exactly how it was done but I followed the instructions in the haynes manual to remove the steering wheel column cover. If it has tilt steering, you must pull steering wheel, plate, and lift up turn signal switch to access three torx screws. Remove one at a time, apply locktite and tighten. Reverse procedure. If it is not a tilt wheel, then you may have a worn bearing or a loose center steering wheel nut. Must inspect.
