Detach the vacuum hose from the vacuum advance unit. Remove the distributor cap and unscrew the two mounting screws. Pull the rotor off the shaft and remove those two mounting screws as well. Unscrew the two advance unit mounting screws and remove the unit from the distributor.
on this old distributor there is a cap that holds the wires in place on the distributor. Is there a trick to remove top cap?
Which 454? The LS5 and LS6 are two VERY different engines even though they are both 454's. Timing specs are different as well. 8 degrees before TDC at idle will work for either, but may not be optimal.
A 454 in a Ford? That is a Chevrolet engine. Regardless, Advance, Carquest, Auto Zone, O'Reilys, will all have competitive prices. Compare them all.
The typical timing for a 1985 Chevy 454 is 8 degrees before top dead center. The vacuum line removed from the distributor and plugged. The engine warm and idling at 700 rpm.
I believe it is behind the engine on the firewall. It is a single wire and connection that breaks out of the main harness.
The most common cause of that problem is that the accelerator PUMP that is inside of the carburetor needs REPLACED. Get someone that knows those kind of carburetors inside and out to REBUILD it for you. I would also CHECK the timing and vacuum advance on the distributor too. I believe you will find your problem in those areas.
There are two screws that hold it to the distributor.
i need a vacuum diagram for a 1994 fleetwood bounder with a 454 general motors engine
Clockwise.
yes, as long as the 454 is not a tall deck block.
No need to if the distributor was not moved.
