I took my 2004 convertible beetle to the Volkswagen dealership they arranged to have the rear window repaired by a upholstery dealer. You do not have to replace the
top it cost $4,000 to replace. Instead of having it repaired by the upholstery dealer who is going to charge $500-600. We are going to repair it ourselves with Rhino glue.
I went to their website and ordered the glue. This is the same process used by the
upholstery dealer.

It is not advised it repair a convertible top with tape. The types of tape that would survive the weather would be near impossible to remove later.

yes, absolutely. it has to be done by the dealer, which i wouldn't take my care within 10 ft. of one, or by a reliable repair shop. i had mine done this year by my repair shop that specializes in foreign car repair. you don't have to get a canvas top from BMW, there are many sites that sell quality sail cloth tops if not the same, even better the the oem top. the top comes with the window too but you can just replace the window by itself as well. BMW doesnt make a tinted window for the z3 but again, z3solution.com sells just the tinted window if you prefer that.
Unlatch the latches at the top of the window, then press the convertible top button down. this button is located near the armrest. If this does not work you must aquire a new convertible top motor. from the trunk, remove hyd. fluid from the conv. top pump, operate top by hand. worked for me for years

Power the window all the way down then hold it for five seconds after its completely down. then power the window all the way up and hold it for an additional five seconds. The convertible top should be up during this window 'reset'.
