My experience was with a 2001 F150, but I think the consoles are the same design.
There is an outer shell that is the same color as your dash panel. The inner shell is black and is secured to the roof panel with two Phillips head screws. There is a large rectangle hole at the forward end of the black shell which allows the plug and wiring harness from the roof/windshield area to pass through for hookup to the plug and electronic module in the outer shell. The outer shell is held to the inner shell by a Philips head screw at the forward end of the outer shell and two spring clamps, one on each side about midway down the sides of the outer shell.
CONSOLE REMOVAL:
1. Remove Philips head screw from the forward end of the outer shell.
2. Grasp the forward end of the loosened outer shell (both sides) and pull firmly down on the outer shell to pop the side clamps free from the inner shell.
3. Disconnect the wiring harness plug from the connector by pressing on side spring clip and pulling the plug and connector apart. The outer shell is now fully separated from the inner shell.
4. If there is a need to remove the black inner shell, remove the two Phillips head screws at the forward end of the shell. The shell is now free moving, but the surrounding flange is still located inside the headliner shell. You will need to pull the surrounding edges of the headliner opening down gently and work the inner shell out of the opening in the headliner. Patience and persistence in maneuvering the shell from under the headliner is required to prevent damaging the headliner. A good upholstery tool will help with this process. I did not have one and managed to work the shell free with my fingers.
5. I strongly suggest leaving the original black inner shell attached to the roof undisturbed and simply replacing the outer shell and electronic module, depending on your reason for wanting to replace the overhead console. Most problems (broken pull down doors or inop electronic module) are within the outer shell. Leave the inner shell alone and save yourself a lot of unnecessary work.
6. Reverse the removal process to install your new outer shell.
7. Good Luck!
